Chapter 7
PART 7:
The footage showed Dominic’s mother clearly.
Standing there.
Wine glass in hand.
Watching her son force his wife’s hand onto the stove.
Then stepping over the woman on the floor and saying:
Maybe now she’ll learn her place.
The father’s role was quieter.
But the footage showed him too.
Looking from the living room.
Turning back to the television.
Doing nothing.
The prosecutor called it evidence of a household that enabled violence.
Dominic was charged with domestic assault causing serious injury.
His mother was investigated for failure to aid and witness intimidation after she tried to contact the young wife through relatives.
His father was not charged at first, but his statement became part of the case after he lied about being asleep during the incident.
He had been awake.
The television reflection in the kitchen window proved it.
That detail came from the camera.
A small truth in a polished window.
The kind rich families never think will matter.
The protective order was granted quickly.
Dominic was barred from contacting her.
His parents were barred too.
For the first time in years, she slept without listening for footsteps outside the bedroom door.
Not well.
Not peacefully.
But without him in the house.
The house itself became evidence.
So she never returned to live there.
With the advocate’s help, she moved into a confidential apartment.
Small.
Plain.
Safe.
The first dinner she cooked there was soup from a can.
She burned the toast.
For one terrible second, the smell made her freeze.
Her body remembered before her mind could stop it.
Then she looked around.
No Dominic.
No mother-in-law.
No father watching television.
No one to punish her for bread.
She sat on the kitchen floor and cried until the toast went cold.
Then she threw it away.
And made another piece.
