Chapter 5

PART 5:

For two weeks, she carried that secret like a match under her tongue.

She waited for a moment to leave.

A day Dominic was gone.

A day his parents were out.

A day she could get her documents, her bag, and her body through the door.

But abusers sense distance.

Dominic began watching her more closely.

He checked her drawers.

He counted her steps.

He asked why she no longer cried when he yelled.

That frightened him.

Not her tears.

Her quiet.

On the night of the steak dinner, everything was already wrong before the pan hit the floor.

Dominic’s parents had invited another couple over, then canceled at the last minute.

His mother still demanded the full meal.

Steak.

Potatoes.

Asparagus.

Salad.

Wine.

Dessert.

The young wife had been cooking for three hours with a headache and a bruised hip from where Dominic had shoved her into the laundry room the day before.

When the first steak came out too rare, Dominic threw it into the sink.

When the second came out too done, his mother laughed.

“Some women are simply not raised for a proper household.”

The wife picked up the third pan.

Her wrist gave out.

The pan fell.

And Dominic finally did something so violent that even his perfect kitchen could not hide it.

Now he was in handcuffs, shouting that it was his house, his wife, his private family matter.

The officer holding him did not loosen his grip.

“Your private family matter is on live emergency footage.”

Dominic stopped struggling.

His mother whispered, “Footage?”

The second officer looked under the kitchen island and saw the tiny green light still active.

He looked back at the young wife.

“You pressed the alert?”

She nodded, shaking.

“My hand,” she whispered.

The officer called for paramedics.

Dominic’s father finally stepped into the kitchen.

“Officer, this is being misunderstood.”

The officer looked at the burned woman on the floor.

Then at the steak, the towel, the stove, the wine glass in the mother’s hand.

“No, sir,” he said. “It’s being documented.”

👉 But Dominic’s mother made one final mistake — she tried to blame the woman the camera had just saved.
