Chapter 5

PART 5:
Before his wife could respond, the elevators opened again.
Three people stepped out.
The board chair.
The head of HR.
And the company’s legal counsel.
Now the lobby was not just silent.
It was breathless.
Ethan straightened his jacket, trying to recover the version of himself everyone feared and respected.
“Richard,” he said to the board chair, forcing a laugh. “This is a personal matter.”
The board chair looked at the suitcases.
Then at the intern.
Then at Ethan’s wife.
“No,” he said quietly. “It became a company matter when investor relations received a complaint this morning.”
Ethan’s eyes flashed toward his wife.
She met his glare without blinking.
The legal counsel opened a folder.
“There are also concerns about misuse of company funds, inappropriate conduct with a subordinate, retaliation, and reputational exposure.”
The intern covered her mouth.
Ethan took a step back.
“That’s ridiculous,” he said. “She’s angry. She’s making things up.”
His wife finally reached into the second suitcase.
Not dramatically.
Not angrily.
She lifted a leather folder from beneath his shoes and handed it to legal counsel.
“Hotel invoices,” she said. “Company card. Two business trips that never included clients. Dinner receipts marked as investor development. Security logs. Messages. And the NDA he tried to make her sign last week.”
The intern’s head snapped toward Ethan.
“You said that was to protect me.”
Ethan turned on her instantly.
“Don’t speak.”
And that was the moment everyone saw him clearly.
Not charming.
Not controlled.
Not brilliant.
Just cruel.
The wife looked at the intern, and her expression softened for the first time.
“He was never going to choose you,” she said. “He was going to erase you.”
The intern began to cry.
Ethan pointed at his wife.
“You planned this.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
He laughed bitterly.
“So this is revenge?”
“No,” she said. “Revenge would have been destroying you quietly.”
She stepped closer.
May you like
“This is accountability.”
👉 Then the board chair said the words Ethan never thought anyone would dare say to him…
