Chapter 7

PART 7:
Security arrived two minutes later.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

Just two calm guards in dark suits.

One of them asked Ethan for his badge.

Ethan looked around the lobby, waiting for someone to defend him.

No one did.

Not the analysts.

Not the receptionist.

Not the executives near the stairs.

The same people who once laughed at his jokes now watched him stand beside two suitcases filled with proof of who he really was.

His hand shook as he removed the badge from his jacket.

“This isn’t over,” he said to his wife.

She picked up the wedding photo and placed it gently on top of his folded shirts.

“It is for me.”

Then she turned and walked toward the doors.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then the receptionist stood.

Not clapping.

Just standing.

Then one employee after another rose quietly from their desks and lobby chairs.

The sound was soft at first.

Chairs sliding back.

Shoes shifting against marble.

People choosing, without a word, not to look away anymore.

The wife stopped near the entrance.

She did not turn around for Ethan.

She turned around for herself.

The morning sun came through the glass behind her, catching the tears she had refused to let fall in front of him.

But she was not breaking.

She was leaving whole.

Behind her, Ethan stood with no badge.

No control.

No applause.

No loyal audience.

Only two suitcases.

A ruined image.

And a lobby full of people who finally knew the truth.

👉 Three months later, Ethan learned that public shame was only the first thing he was going to lose…
