Chapter 8 - I Chose Maisie Before I Chose the Truth

My engagement ended before I understood everything.
I did not scream.
I didn't humiliate Veronica publicly.
I took off the ring and placed it on the hotel table between us.
“We're done.”
Her eyes filled.
“Robert.”
“You knew my daughter was alive.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No.”
That word had become very clear.
“You were protecting the life you built with me.”
She didn't deny it.
Meanwhile, Maisie's identity was confirmed through available records and later family testing where appropriate.
She was Emily's daughter.
My granddaughter.
That truth should have felt miraculous.
Instead, it came wrapped in fear.
I petitioned through proper channels to provide Maisie a stable temporary home while authorities and child welfare professionals determined what had happened to Emily.
I converted a guest room.
Bought clothes.
Put night-lights in the hallway.
Maisie ate slowly now.
But she still hid bread in her pockets.
The first time I found a dinner roll under her pillow, I didn't mention it.
I simply stocked a basket of snacks beside her bed.
Three days later, she stopped hiding food.
That mattered more to me than any company audit.
Then June called.
She had found Emily's metal box.
It had been hidden inside an old upright piano.
The green folder was still there.
So was a handwritten list.
Five names.
Frank Delaney.
Allan Hayes.
Two men I didn't recognize.
And one name I did.
Mine.
Robert Reed.
For several minutes, I stared at it.
I had spent days asking who betrayed Emily.
May you like
Now there was evidence she considered me part of the same story.
And I had no idea why.
