Chapter 2

PART 2:

Ryan lowered his voice, the way he always did when he wanted the threat to belong only to her.

“You’re making a scene.”

Ava looked past him at the open suitcase in the grass.

Inside were his cufflinks, a black toiletry bag, a phone recording beside her makeup pouch, and a thick folder of property documents.

Ryan followed her eyes.

For the first time that afternoon, his confidence cracked.

Ava said, “You forgot who signed the deed.”

His mother froze.

“What did she say?”

Before Ryan could answer, a black SUV rolled up the drive.

Two security men stepped out first.

Then an older attorney in a gray suit walked toward the gate with a folder in his hand.

He stopped beside Ava.

Not Ryan.

Ava.

The attorney opened the file and looked directly at him.

“Mr. Hayes, step away from my client’s property.”

Ryan stared at him.

His mother’s voice shook.

“What property?”

Ava looked at her husband and finally said the word he had never believed she had the right to say.

“Mine.”

Ryan laughed once.

It sounded fake even to him.

“Your property? Ava, stop embarrassing yourself.”

But nobody moved to help him.

Not the security men.

Not the attorney.

Not the house staff watching from the side entrance.

For three years, Ryan had walked through that mansion like a king.

He hosted parties on the terrace.

He introduced Ava as “my wife” with one hand around her waist and one warning in his fingers.

He told guests the lakefront estate had been in his family for generations.

His mother repeated it proudly.

“The Hayes house,” she called it.

Ava never corrected her.

At first, because she was kind.

May you like

Later, because she was afraid.

👉 But the mansion Ryan called his family’s legacy had belonged to Ava long before he ever walked through its doors.
