Chapter 4

PART 4:

The real Ryan appeared slowly.

First, he corrected her clothes.

Then her friends.

Then her schedule.

He hated when she worked.

He hated when she visited her old neighborhood.

He hated when someone praised her without praising him first.

His mother moved into the guest wing “temporarily” after a minor surgery and never left.

She watched Ava like a security camera.

“You’re lucky,” she would say at breakfast. “Most women would kill to live like this.”

Ava would look around the kitchen her grandmother once filled with music and Sunday bread.

Then she would nod.

Because arguing with Ryan’s mother always ended with Ryan calling Ava ungrateful.

The first bruise came after a charity dinner.

Ava had corrected Ryan when he told a donor the foundation was “his wife’s little hobby.”

She said, gently, “It’s not a hobby. It’s my job.”

In the car, Ryan did not speak.

At home, his hand closed around her arm so hard she gasped.

“You embarrassed me.”

The next morning, he brought her coffee.

He kissed her forehead.

He said he was stressed.

His mother told Ava, “Marriage requires patience.”

So Ava covered the bruise with long sleeves.

The second time, Ryan shoved a vase off the dining table.

The third time, he grabbed her jaw.

The fourth time, he apologized before she even hit the floor.

Each time, the mansion grew colder.

The staff noticed.

One housekeeper left ice packs outside Ava’s bedroom without saying a word.

The gardener stopped trimming near the office window because he could hear shouting.

The driver once asked Ava quietly if she had somewhere else to go.

Ava almost said, “This is my house.”

But by then, Ryan had made even that truth feel dangerous.

👉 Then one night, Ava found the documents that proved Ryan was not just controlling her — he was trying to steal everything.
