Chapter 8

PART 8:

The officer stepped out and spoke to Ava first.

That alone made Ryan furious.

Ava gave a statement.

So did the attorney.

So did the housekeeper, who had quietly returned and handed over photographs of broken furniture, damaged doors, and a small notebook of dates she had written down because she feared one day Ava would need proof.

Ava stared at the notebook.

The housekeeper lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry I didn’t do more.”

Ava touched her arm gently.

“You did enough today.”

Ryan watched everything unravel in real time.

The fake ownership.

The false invoices.

The threats.

The bruises.

The mother who had protected his ego instead of the truth.

The police did not drag him away in handcuffs that afternoon.

Not yet.

Real justice rarely moves like a movie.

But they removed him from the property.

They issued a temporary protective order.

They told him he could not return.

They told his mother the guest wing was no longer available to her either.

That was when she finally turned on Ava completely.

“You’re destroying this family.”

Ava looked back at the mansion.

At the windows her grandmother used to clean with vinegar and newspaper.

At the porch where she had once promised herself she would build a peaceful life.

Then she looked at Ryan’s mother.

“No,” Ava said. “I’m taking mine back.”

The older woman’s face crumpled with rage.

“You were never good enough for him.”

Ava smiled faintly.

“That was the first true thing you’ve said.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I kept trying to become small enough for your love,” Ava said. “But I was never the one who needed to shrink.”

For the first time, Ryan had no answer.

The security men loaded his remaining belongings into his car.

His mother stood beside him, humiliated in front of the same mansion she had claimed as her family’s prize.

The iron gate closed slowly.

Ava stayed on the inside.

Ryan stayed on the outside.

And the sound of the lock felt like a heartbeat returning.

👉 But taking back the mansion was only the beginning — because the courtroom would soon hear Ryan’s own voice.
