Chapter 12 - The Lie Voss Protected

Voss did not deny it.
That silence broke something inside Noah.
He stepped backward as though the colonel had struck him.
Titan remained seated at Voss’s side, waiting with the absolute certainty of an animal responding to a deeply embedded truth.
Mara looked at Voss’s face.
Details rearranged themselves.
Noah’s gray-blue eyes.
The way he tilted his head when listening.
The small line between his brows when angry.
She had seen those traits in Voss for years and never allowed herself to connect them.
“No,” she whispered.
Voss opened his eyes.
“I did not know until after Daniel’s mission.”
“You were at Saint Vale.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to me?”
His voice became rough.
“You were injured during an operation. Evelyn ordered your evacuation to a private Aster facility. You had internal bleeding.”
“I remember the hospital.”
“Only part of it.”
Mara stepped closer.
“What did they do?”
Voss looked at Evelyn’s approaching vehicles in the distance.
“They used an experimental regenerative treatment. You were unconscious for nearly forty-eight hours.”
“That does not explain Noah.”
“No.”
“Then explain him.”
Voss’s jaw tightened.
“Months earlier, before you married Daniel, you and I were assigned to a long-term cover operation.”
Mara remembered fragments.
A safe house.
A coastal town.
Weeks of surveillance.
One night after an explosion, both of them shaken, exhausted, believing they might not survive the next day.
She remembered waking beside Voss.
They had never spoken of it again.
“I was already pregnant when I entered Saint Vale,” she said.
“You did not know.”
“Daniel and I thought—”
“The dates were close enough.”
Mara looked toward Daniel.
He stood completely still.
“You knew about Voss and me?”
“Not then.”
“When did you learn?”
“Before the final mission.”
“And you still left that letter.”
Daniel’s eyes moved to Noah.
“Biology did not change what he was to me.”
Voss finally looked at Noah.
“I stayed away because Daniel was your father in every way that mattered.”
“You watched us,” Noah said.
“Yes.”
“You built a bunker under our house.”
“Daniel built it. I maintained it.”
“You came to my birthday parties.”
“Twice.”
“You shook Dad’s hand.”
“Yes.”
Noah’s voice sharpened.
“And both of you stood there pretending.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I wasn’t pretending when I called you my son.”
Noah turned on him.
“You disappeared for eight years.”
“I was held prisoner.”
“And when you escaped, you used me to draw Mom into a school gym.”
Pain moved through Daniel’s face.
“I needed to expose North.”
“You needed a symbol on television.”
“I needed them to reveal themselves.”
“You made Carter humiliate me.”
“I knew you could withstand him.”
Noah stared at him.
“That might be the worst thing anyone has said to me today.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Mara moved between the three men.
The approaching engines were closer.
“Voss, did Evelyn alter Noah’s records?”
“Yes.”
“Did she order you to hide the paternity result?”
“Yes.”
“Did she forge my signature on Daniel’s termination order?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel laughed.
“You always say that before the worst truth arrives.”
Ortiz helped Titan stand.
“The response proves Voss’s scent and command profile were stored at Noah’s birth. It strongly suggests he was identified as the biological father.”
“Strongly?” Noah asked.
“It is not a DNA test.”
“Then test us.”
Voss immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Noah stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because any sample could activate Noah’s dormant military identity file.”
Mara looked at Voss.
“What identity file?”
He took a slow breath.
“Evelyn did not merely seal Noah’s birth record. She entered him into the Aster succession index.”
Daniel’s head snapped up.
“You told me the succession protocol was abandoned.”
“It was.”
“What is it?” Mara demanded.
Voss looked toward the red crate.
“Aster was designed to survive the loss of its leadership. Certain descendants were entered as future biometric keys to prevent hostile control.”
Noah’s face went pale.
“I’m a key.”
“Your bloodline may unlock the full index.”
“Which bloodline?”
“Evelyn’s through Mara. Mine through Aster command.”
Mara felt sick.
“My mother planned him.”
“No,” Voss said. “She exploited his existence after discovering it.”
“That distinction will not save you.”
The first dark SUV turned onto the road beside the utility building.
Ortiz packed the scanner.
“We need to choose now.”
“Choose what?” Noah asked.
“Evelyn can open the crate without risking destruction,” she said. “But once she has the index, she controls every hidden Aster identity.”
Daniel stepped beside the crate.
“And if we do not give it to her, North will keep hunting Noah.”
Voss looked at Mara.
“There is a third option.”
“What?”
“Destroy it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“The crate contains proof. Without it, Evelyn will erase everything again.”
“It also contains the names and locations of people who trusted us to keep them hidden.”
“And North already has part of the roster.”
“Not the new identities.”
Mara looked at the red crate.
Proof that could expose decades of crimes.
Names that could get innocent people killed.
A secret organization led by her supposedly dead mother.
A husband returned from captivity.
A colonel who was Noah’s biological father.
And a son standing at the center of a conflict designed before he was born.
The convoy stopped.
Doors opened.
Men and women in tactical uniforms surrounded the building.
No visible weapons, but their movements were precise and coordinated.
Evelyn stepped from the second SUV.
She wore a dark coat over a black uniform.
Even from a distance, Mara recognized the controlled posture.
Her mother walked toward them.
Daniel’s hand tightened around the crate handle.
Voss moved to Noah’s side.
Titan stood between all three men, uncertain which command to follow.
Evelyn stopped twenty feet away.
“Mara,” she said. “Bring me the crate.”
Mara placed her hand on the lid.
“Tell me who forged my signature.”
Evelyn’s eyes moved briefly toward Voss.
Then Daniel.
“Your husband did.”
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s a lie.”
Evelyn removed a small recorder from her pocket.
She pressed play.
Daniel’s voice emerged.
Clear.
Cold.
“Use Mara’s authorization. Voss will believe it.”
Noah looked at the man he had called Dad.
Daniel’s face emptied.
“I never said that.”
May you like
Evelyn held up the recorder.
“The original is inside the crate.”
