Chapter 14 - The Sister Who Learned Mara’s Voice

The drone remained twenty feet above them.
Aster personnel spread outward, searching the surrounding roofs and tree line.
Evelyn did not move.
Mara stared at the small black camera.
“Rebecca?”
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“So she finally gave you my name.”
“Where are you?”
“Close enough to see whether she lies.”
Evelyn raised her chin.
“You are exposing yourself unnecessarily.”
“I learned that from you.”
Daniel moved beside Mara.
“The woman outside the school?”
“No,” Rebecca replied. “That was Daniel.”
Mara looked at him.
He did not deny it.
“The order delivered to Reed?” Mara asked.
“That was me.”
“You brought the K9 formation.”
“I ensured it arrived.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I used a pattern Aster has used against you for years.”
“Why?”
“To make Titan reveal the symbol.”
“You wanted Aster exposed.”
“I wanted Mother forced into daylight.”
Evelyn’s voice remained cold.
“And how many people were you willing to endanger?”
Rebecca laughed again.
“You built your career asking that question only after your own plans failed.”
Noah stepped beneath the drone.
“Did you send Carter after me?”
The speaker went silent.
Mara’s muscles tightened.
“Answer him.”
“No,” Rebecca said. “Daniel arranged Carter.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Carter was already working with North.”
“You gave Mercer the school schedule.”
“I gave Mercer a chance to expose Carter’s contact.”
“You knew Carter would target Noah,” Mara said.
“I knew he might.”
Noah looked at Daniel.
The betrayal in his expression deepened.
“You didn’t just use me. You chose him because you knew he hated our family.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I believed I could control the situation.”
“You were eight years too late to start acting like my father.”
Daniel stopped.
The drone shifted toward the red crate.
Rebecca’s voice became softer.
“Mara, the evidence inside that container will prove Evelyn authorized Saint Vale.”
Evelyn looked up.
“Rebecca was unstable before Meridian.”
“I was twelve when you sent me there.”
Noah stared at Evelyn.
“You experimented on your own daughter?”
“I tried to save her.”
Rebecca’s voice sharpened.
“You tried to erase me.”
Mara looked at her mother.
“Why was she declared dead?”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“Rebecca was born with a neurological condition that caused violent sensory episodes. Aster physicians believed they could help.”
“By taking her from you?”
“By separating her from civilian records.”
“You let me grow up believing I had no sister.”
“I believed she died at Meridian.”
Ortiz shook her head.
“She survived because North removed her.”
Voss looked toward the drone.
“Rebecca is North.”
“No,” Rebecca said. “North existed before me. I inherited what Evelyn created and what others corrupted.”
“Then you control it,” Mara replied.
“I control part of it.”
“What do you want?”
“The crate.”
“Why?”
“To identify every person who participated in the trials.”
“And after that?”
Silence.
Mara recognized the answer inside the silence.
“You want revenge.”
“I want accountability.”
“Accountability does not hide behind forged signatures and manipulated children.”
“You sound like Mother.”
The insult struck deeper than Rebecca intended.
Mara looked at Noah.
He stood beside Titan, surrounded by adults who had converted love into secrecy and secrecy into control.
She would not become another version of Evelyn.
“You will not get the crate,” Mara said.
The drone lowered slightly.
“Then Mother will.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you going to do?”
Mara turned to the red container.
“We open it under independent observation.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“There is no independent authority capable of securing the index.”
“Then we create one.”
“You cannot create trust in the middle of an active breach.”
“No. But I can stop letting the people who caused the breach define the choices.”
She looked at Reed.
“Can the crate be moved to the school?”
“The school?”
“It has public cameras, local authorities, teachers, and hundreds of witnesses.”
Daniel understood first.
“You want to finish the demonstration.”
“I want nobody to disappear with the truth.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You would expose classified identities in a public building.”
“I would open only the authentication layer. The index remains sealed until we establish protection.”
Rebecca’s drone circled.
“You think cameras will save you?”
“No,” Mara said. “But they will make it harder for any of you to rewrite what happens.”
Noah watched her.
For the first time since the gym, some of the anger left his face.
Voss lifted one side of the crate.
“I’ll help.”
Daniel took the other side.
Their eyes met over the red metal lid.
Two fathers.
One by blood.
One by choice.
Neither trusted the other.
Evelyn’s team began reorganizing around the transport vehicles.
Rebecca’s drone rose higher.
Ortiz gathered her equipment.
Mara approached Noah.
“I need you to stay with Reed.”
“No.”
“Noah.”
“You keep sending me away before every truth.”
“This may be dangerous.”
“It has been dangerous since Carter put a microphone in my face.”
Mara looked at Titan.
The dog remained alert, his body close to Noah’s leg.
“He stays beside me,” Noah said.
Mara wanted to refuse.
Instead, she nodded.
They returned to the school under escort.
The gymnasium had been cleared of students, but teachers, local police, federal representatives, and school officials gathered near the court. News vehicles crowded the parking lot. The viral video had transformed the building into the center of national attention.
Carter was still missing.
The live broadcast had ended after Daniel left the warehouse.
No one knew how Carter escaped or where he had gone.
The red crate was placed at center court.
Beneath the American flag.
Exactly where Carter had accused Noah.
Mara stood before it.
Evelyn placed her palm against the first biometric reader.
A green light appeared.
Mara placed her palm against the second.
The reader scanned her hand.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the crate unlocked with a deep internal click.
Everyone in the gym held their breath.
The lid rose two inches.
A small screen illuminated on the front.
IDENTITY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.
Three names appeared.
EVELYN CROSS.
MARA HALE.
REBECCA CROSS.
Mara looked at her mother.
“You said only our biometrics were required.”
“I believed they were.”
A voice came from the open gym doors.
“You always believed whatever kept me buried.”
Rebecca walked into the gym.
She looked almost exactly like Mara.
Same height.
Same dark eyes.
Same controlled posture.
A pale scar curved behind her left ear.
Noah stared at the aunt he had never known.
Rebecca stopped beside the crate.
Behind her stood Lieutenant Carter.
His hands were free.
His uniform was gone.
He wore plain dark clothing and held the missing black personnel folder.
Mara looked at him.
“You were working with her.”
Carter’s fear had disappeared.
“So was Daniel.”
Every head turned.
Daniel stood beside Titan.
His face revealed nothing.
Rebecca smiled at Mara.
“The public humiliation, the dogs, the tag, the warehouse—it was never Daniel’s plan to expose North.”
May you like
She touched the third biometric reader.
“It was his initiation.”
