Chapter 6 - The Signature at the Bottom

Mara read the document twice.

The words did not change.

TARGET STATUS: COMPROMISED.

RECOVERY IMPRACTICAL.

TERMINATION AUTHORIZED.

Her own signature appeared beneath the authorization block.

It looked perfect.

The slant of the letters.

The shortened stroke in the H.

The small break in the final line that had developed after she injured her wrist during training.

Noah stood close enough to read over her shoulder.

“You signed an order to kill Dad?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Voss remained across the room with Reed between them.

“It was entered into the Aster archive forty-eight hours before the final operation,” he said.

“I never saw this.”

“Your authentication code was attached.”

“Codes can be stolen.”

“Biometric confirmation was also logged.”

Mara looked at him.

“You believed I signed it.”

Voss’s silence lasted too long.

“You believed I ordered Daniel’s death, and you never confronted me.”

“The operation collapsed before an inquiry could begin.”

“So you buried the document.”

“I sealed it.”

“Along with Daniel?”

Noah stepped away from his mother.

She felt the distance immediately.

He looked at the page again.

“What happened on that mission?”

Mara folded the document.

“This is not the place.”

“You keep saying that whenever the truth gets close.”

“Noah.”

“No. At school, you said you saw him die. Now he says Colonel Voss buried him alive, and there’s an order with your signature.”

“I did not sign it.”

“But you were there.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me what you saw.”

Mara looked toward the windows.

Neighbors stood behind curtains. Police vehicles blocked the road. A tactical team moved through the backyard.

The house was no longer safe, but the truth was even less contained.

She sat on the edge of the sofa.

Noah remained standing.

“Task Group Aster was a joint special operations support unit,” she said. “We worked with military working dogs in environments where regular recovery teams could not operate.”

“Were you a SEAL?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

“Carter was right?”

“Carter was wrong to call you a liar. I never told you I was a SEAL. I trained beside them, deployed with them, and led recovery operations supporting their missions. My exact status was sealed because Aster operated across service lines.”

Noah absorbed that.

“What did Dad do?”

“He designed canine recognition systems and served as an operational handler. Titan was his dog before he was mine.”

Titan shifted beside the door.

Mara looked at him.

“The final mission involved recovering a captured intelligence officer from a coastal compound. Daniel discovered someone inside Aster was feeding our routes to the enemy.”

“Who?”

“We never found out.”

“What happened?”

“Our aircraft was redirected to a false extraction point. We came under fire before landing. Communications failed. Daniel and Titan were separated from the rest of us.”

Her voice became quieter.

“I found Daniel beneath a collapsed concrete structure. He was bleeding badly. Titan was beside him.”

“Was he breathing?”

“Yes.”

Noah’s face tightened.

“You said you saw him die.”

“I watched his pulse stop.”

“Did you check?”

“I held my fingers against his neck until there was nothing.”

“And then?”

“The structure began collapsing. Voss ordered immediate evacuation.”

Noah looked at the colonel.

“You left him there.”

Voss’s expression remained controlled, but grief moved behind his eyes.

“I had six injured personnel and an enemy team approaching.”

“You left him.”

“I made the decision your mother could not.”

Mara stood.

“Do not put that on me.”

“You refused to release his body.”

“I was trying to revive him.”

“You were going to die beside him.”

“You pulled me away.”

“Yes.”

“And sealed the site.”

“To prevent enemy recovery of classified equipment.”

Noah’s breathing became uneven.

“So Dad could have survived.”

Mara’s throat tightened.

“No one could have survived that collapse.”

“But he did.”

Nobody answered.

A medic called from the kitchen.

Mercer had lost consciousness again.

Reed moved to check on him.

Voss looked at Mara.

“The termination order may have been planted to divide us.”

“It succeeded.”

“It may have been planted recently.”

“The archive timestamp says otherwise.”

“Archive timestamps can be rewritten.”

Mara unfolded the paper.

“Why carry this now?”

“Because when Daniel’s token reactivated, I accessed the sealed investigation.”

“You accessed my file.”

“I accessed everything.”

“You had no authority.”

“Neither did the person bringing the dead back into the system.”

Noah turned toward the disposable phone.

“Can you trace the call?”

Reed returned.

“Signal bounced through several relays. The final location appears to be within thirty miles.”

“Can you find the warehouse?” Noah asked.

“We’re trying.”

Mara looked at the hidden tag removed from Titan’s harness.

“Daniel wanted to know whether Titan remembered him.”

Voss nodded.

“Apparently he does.”

“But why stage it in front of the school?”

“To make contact without approaching you directly.”

“No. He could have watched Titan anywhere. He wanted Carter to accuse Noah publicly.”

Carter’s face surfaced in her mind.

His prepared confidence.

Mercer’s revised order.

The students recording.

Daniel—or whoever controlled Daniel’s identity—had designed a spectacle.

Not merely to test Titan.

To expose Mara.

Voss seemed to reach the same conclusion.

“Someone wanted your existence publicly confirmed.”

Mara looked toward Noah.

“And my connection to him.”

Reed’s radio crackled.

He listened.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The school footage is online.”

Voss cursed.

“I thought the recordings were contained.”

“They were. This upload came from the education channel’s external backup.”

Mara took Reed’s phone.

The video had already spread across multiple accounts.

Carter’s accusation.

The doors opening.

The dogs sitting.

The hidden tag appearing beneath Titan’s harness.

Millions of people could soon freeze that final frame.

A symbol erased eight years ago was visible in high resolution.

Voss pointed toward the insignia.

“That was the objective.”

A second notification appeared.

Someone had posted a comment beneath the video from an account created minutes earlier.

The profile image showed Daniel Hale.

The message contained only six words.

ASK MARA WHAT HAPPENED TO ASTER.

Then another notification appeared.

A live broadcast had started from the same account.

Mara opened it.

The screen showed a dim room and a chair beneath a hanging light.

Lieutenant Carter sat in the chair.

His hands were bound behind him.

He had been taken from the school without anyone noticing.

A figure moved behind the camera.

May you like

Daniel’s voice spoke from the darkness.

“You called my son a liar.”
