Chapter 11 - Caroline's Final Warning

Grant watched the video with Tessa beside him.

Caroline looked tired.

But calm.

“Grant, Vivienne has been inside our house.”

Grant swallowed.

Caroline explained that she had caught Vivienne searching Noah's nursery months earlier.

This was before Grant believed he had ever met her.

Vivienne had entered using a service code supplied by someone at Mercer Development.

Caroline discovered the access logs.

She confronted Charles.

He admitted Vivienne was Richard Hale's daughter.

Then Caroline said:

“She is looking for the ledger, but I don't believe that's her only objective.”

Grant leaned closer.

Vivienne had begun researching Noah's trust.

Specifically, whether marriage to Grant could give her indirect influence over his voting rights while he was a minor.

Grant felt sick.

The engagement ring.

The relationship.

The perfectly timed meetings.

Vivienne hadn't simply fallen into his life after Caroline died.

She had positioned herself there.

Caroline continued:

“If she approaches you after I'm gone, please don't assume coincidence.”

Grant closed his eyes.

He had done exactly that.

Vivienne first “met” him at a charity event four months after Caroline's death.

She had known exactly who he was.

Exactly how vulnerable he was.

Exactly what Noah would eventually control.

Tessa whispered:

“She planned it.”

Grant nodded.

Caroline's final warning explained why Vivienne's rage toward Noah intensified.

Grant had delayed proposing.

Then recently told Vivienne he intended to place Noah's inherited voting rights under independent management.

That would permanently block any future spouse from controlling them.

Vivienne's years of positioning herself would become worthless.

Then Tessa had begun watching her.

Then the cameras came back online.

Then everything exploded.

Caroline's recording ended:

“If I'm wrong, forgive me for being suspicious.”

A sad smile.

“But if I'm right, protect Noah. And don't protect the Mercer name at his expense.”

The screen went black.

Grant cried.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

Tessa stayed beside him.

“She saved him.”

Grant shook his head.

“You did.”

Tessa looked away.

“She gave me instructions.”

“You took a vase to the head for him.”

Tessa smiled weakly.

“She would've done worse to me if I let her reach him.”

Grant looked toward Noah playing safely on the rug.

Then toward the security camera.

The same camera that captured the attack.

He finally understood why Caroline had insisted cameras be installed throughout the house.

They weren't about theft.

They were about accountability.

And now investigators had everything.

The attack.

The financial records.

The intercepted envelope.

The false entities.

The home intrusion.

Caroline's contemporaneous documentation.

Charles's testimony.

Vivienne's own messages.

Grant didn't need revenge.

May you like

He needed the process to work.

And it finally began to.
