Chapter 6 - Charles Recognized the Key

Charles arrived at noon.
Grant deliberately left the brass key on the coffee table.
His father saw it.
Stopped.
Then immediately looked away.
Grant noticed.
“Recognize it?”
“No.”
“You looked at it.”
“I looked at the table.”
Grant almost smiled.
Charles had taught him how to negotiate.
Never answer more than necessary.
Never reveal what frightened you.
Today, Charles was breaking his own rules.
Grant sat opposite him.
“Caroline hid this inside Noah's toy.”
Charles's face remained controlled.
“Why?”
“You tell me.”
“I can't.”
“Or won't?”
Tessa stood in the hallway with Noah.
Charles glanced toward them.
“Can we discuss this privately?”
“No.”
“Grant.”
“Tessa was attacked protecting my son. She stays.”
Charles looked uncomfortable.
Grant continued.
“Vivienne visited Caroline in the hospital.”
Charles went still.
“She intercepted an envelope Caroline sent to Tessa.”
Nothing.
“She has been searching my house.”
Still nothing.
“She called you immediately after attacking Noah.”
Charles finally looked up.
“Attacking?”
Grant watched him carefully.
“You didn't know?”
“No.”
That reaction appeared genuine.
Grant showed him the footage.
Vivienne kicking toward Noah.
Tessa intervening.
The vase striking Tessa.
Charles's face changed completely.
“Jesus Christ.”
Grant paused the video.
“Did you know she was looking for Caroline's evidence?”
Charles said nothing.
“Dad.”
Finally:
“Yes.”
Tessa stared at him.
Grant felt something inside him sink.
“How long?”
“Seven months.”
“Since Caroline died?”
“Before.”
Grant stood.
“What did Caroline find?”
Charles looked toward Noah.
“A financial arrangement I should have stopped years ago.”
“Between you and Richard Hale?”
Charles nodded.
Richard Hale had discovered that Charles was quietly borrowing against protected Mercer trust assets during a severe company crisis.
The arrangement initially saved Mercer Development.
Then it became something else.
False consulting contracts.
Hidden transfers.
Manipulated valuations.
Richard wanted more.
Charles paid him.
When Richard was fired, Charles allowed him to take public blame because exposing the full truth would have implicated Charles.
Vivienne grew up believing the Mercers destroyed her father.
Years later, she found his records.
Then approached Charles.
“She blackmailed you.”
“Yes.”
Grant stared.
“And you paid her?”
“For years.”
“Then she came after me.”
Charles lowered his eyes.
“I told her to stay away from you.”
“She became part of my life.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
Charles's silence answered.
Grant's voice broke with rage.
“You let her into my home?”
“I thought if I fought her, she'd expose everything.”
“She went near my son.”
“I never authorized that.”
Grant slammed his palm against the table.
“Stop talking like this is a board meeting!”
Noah began crying.
Grant immediately lowered his voice.
That stopped him more effectively than anything Charles could have said.
He turned away.
Then Charles whispered:
“Caroline found the original ledger.”
Grant looked back.
“What ledger?”
“The one proving I authorized the first transfers.”
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
Charles looked at the brass key.
“But I know what that opens.”
Grant waited.
Charles swallowed.
“A safe-deposit box Caroline and I opened together.”
Grant stared.
“You helped her?”
“At the end.”
“Why?”
Charles looked toward Noah.
“Because she told me Vivienne had started asking what would happen to the trust when Noah inherited.”
Grant's blood ran cold.
May you like
Charles had finally chosen to help Caroline.
But apparently too late.
