Chapter 14 - Tessa Finally Told Grant the Truth

Months passed.
No new conspiracies appeared.
That felt strange.
Grant had become accustomed to every document opening another wound.
Then one evening Tessa asked:
“Can I tell you something?”
Grant looked up.
“That sentence has ruined my life several times.”
She laughed.
“This one's not terrible.”
They sat in the living room.
Noah slept upstairs.
Tessa looked toward Caroline's photograph.
“She knew she was getting sicker.”
Grant nodded.
“She didn't tell me how scared she was.”
“She didn't want you to spend her last months grieving before she was gone.”
“That sounds like her.”
Tessa hesitated.
“She made me promise something.”
Grant waited.
“That I wouldn't let you turn Noah into your reason to stop living.”
Grant looked at her.
Tessa continued:
“She said you'd become overprotective.”
“I am not overprotective.”
“You had three security officers follow us to the pediatrician.”
“Two.”
“Three.”
Grant frowned.
“The driver doesn't count.”
Tessa laughed.
Then became serious.
“Caroline wanted Noah protected. Not imprisoned.”
Grant looked toward the camera.
She was right.
After Vivienne, he checked every door twice.
Every employee.
Every visitor.
He had stopped traveling.
Stopped seeing friends.
Stopped allowing Noah anywhere without security.
Fear had become another kind of control.
That realization hurt.
Vivienne had tried to control Noah for money.
Grant was beginning to control him out of love.
Different motive.
Same danger if taken too far.
So Grant changed.
Slowly.
Noah went to the park.
Then toddler classes.
Then birthday parties.
Grant survived every one.
Barely.
Tessa teased him relentlessly.
Charles continued rebuilding a relationship from a distance.
Noah eventually called him Grandpa.
Charles cried privately afterward.
Grant pretended not to notice.
There was accountability without pretending people were permanently incapable of change.
Vivienne remained outside their lives.
No letters reached Noah.
No messages.
No access.
That boundary never changed.
One afternoon, Grant and Tessa packed away some of Caroline's remaining clothes.
Tessa found the wine-red invitation from the charity event where Vivienne had supposedly first met Grant.
Grant stared at it.
Then tore it in half.
Tessa raised an eyebrow.
“Dramatic.”
“Felt appropriate.”
She laughed.
Grant looked at Caroline's photograph.
“I think I'm finally done.”
“With what?”
“Trying to understand every second of it.”
Tessa nodded.
“Good.”
Grant looked around the living room.
The vase was gone.
The carpet had been replaced.
But one tiny scratch remained on the side table where Vivienne had stumbled after Tessa slapped her.
Grant had considered refinishing it.
He never did.
Not because he wanted to remember Vivienne.
Because he wanted to remember who stood between her and Noah.
He looked at Tessa.
“Thank you.”
She understood immediately.
“You don't owe me.”
May you like
“I know.”
That was why he could finally say it.
