Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s First Story Broke

Vanessa changed her story.

That was the beginning of the end.

First:

She had arrived after Rachel fell.

Now:

She admitted arriving earlier.

Why lie?

“Because Rachel and I argued.”

About what?

“Personal things.”

Then:

She admitted the financial transfers.

But claimed Rachel agreed to them.

Then:

She admitted the frame broke during the argument.

But claimed Rachel smashed it herself.

Then:

She admitted standing near the staircase.

But insisted she never touched Rachel.

Every new piece of evidence pulled another admission out of her.

Not truth willingly offered.

Truth forced through narrowing exits.

The sedative remained her biggest problem.

A search of old purchase records showed she had refilled her mother’s medication three days before Rachel died.

Her mother lived in Florida.

The refill was picked up in Denver.

By Vanessa.

She claimed she planned to mail it.

No shipping record existed.

Then investigators found a text Vanessa had sent Rachel that afternoon.

I’m bringing your favorite lemonade. Peace offering.

Rachel’s stomach contents included lemon beverage.

And trace medication.

That was when I finally stopped wondering whether Vanessa merely witnessed Rachel’s fall.

The evidence was pointing somewhere darker.

Still—

we waited.

Because one missing fact mattered.

Did Vanessa push Rachel?

A prosecutor could prove fraud.

Possible drugging.

Evidence tampering.

False statements.

But homicide required more.

Then Maisie’s toy box gave us one final surprise.

The glass shard had been wrapped in an old tissue.

That tissue carried fibers.

Two types.

Pink cotton from Maisie’s old blanket.

And thin paper fibers from the photograph backing.

Inside one fold was a microscopic dried adhesive residue.

Investigators searched the toy box more carefully.

Wedged beneath the inner lining was a tiny curled strip of paper.

No readable words.

Almost nothing.

But laboratory imaging recovered part of a printed account number.

It matched the V.M. Consulting statement Rachel had photographed.

Rachel’s hidden evidence had been inside the frame.

When the frame shattered, part of the document tore.

Somehow, Maisie ended up with the shard and paper fragment.

Maybe Rachel handed it to her earlier.

Maybe Maisie picked it up afterward.

We would never know.

But the fragment independently tied the broken frame to the financial evidence Vanessa wanted hidden.

Then Detective Mills asked me something.

“Where was Noah during the fall?”

I froze.

His crib had been in the upstairs guest room.

Near the top of the stairs.

Meaning if he was awake—

he may have been the only other living person who saw what happened.
