Chapter 5 - The Insurance File

My insurance agent still had archived correspondence.
I requested everything from the months before Rachel’s death.
One email stood out.
Sent by Rachel.
Subject:
Beneficiary Confirmation.
She had asked whether anyone recently requested changes to my life insurance.
The agent replied:
No changes completed.
However, an online request had been initiated and abandoned.
“What change?” I asked him.
He pulled the record.
Someone had tried to replace Rachel as beneficiary.
With a trust.
Trustee:
Vanessa Morgan.
Her maiden name.
I stared at the screen.
“Rachel never told me this.”
“She called the next day.”
“What did she say?”
“She thought your account had been compromised.”
The request came from an IP address linked to a coffee shop near Vanessa’s old apartment.
Still not enough.
Public Wi-Fi.
Could be anyone.
But the timing was brutal.
Rachel discovered it.
Rachel called Emily.
Rachel planned to show me something.
Rachel died that night.
Then Vanessa entered our home and removed a box of papers.
I called Detective Mills.
His voice sharpened immediately.
“That’s new evidence.”
Not proof of murder.
Evidence.
There was a difference, and I forced myself to respect it.
Then I remembered Noah.
His words.
Daddy gone… she hurt.
Had Vanessa started hitting my children because they remembered something?
They were babies when Rachel died.
Too young for reliable narrative memory.
But children can remember fragments.
Sounds.
Objects.
Fear.
Maisie had kept the glass.
Why?
I reviewed old videos from our home cloud account.
Rachel had filmed everything.
Breakfast.
Bath time.
The children playing.
Three days before she died, Maisie was sitting beside the staircase holding a decorative glass photo frame.
Red border.
Rachel laughed behind the camera.
“Careful, sweetheart. Mommy’s wedding picture is in there.”
I froze the frame.
The red glass border matched the shard.
That was the object.
Rachel’s wedding photo.
The frame had disappeared after her death.
I searched the evidence report.
No photo frame listed.
Only:
“Broken decorative glass.”
Where was the photograph inside it?
Then Emily gasped beside me.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Look at Rachel’s hand.”
In the video, Rachel turned the frame toward the camera.
Behind the wedding photograph—
something white protruded from the backing.
A folded piece of paper.
Rachel had hidden something inside the frame.

And whatever it was—
someone broke that frame on the night she died.
