Chapter 9 - What Happened Before the Fall

Investigators reconstructed the likely sequence.
Not from imagination.
From evidence.
Rachel discovered the fraudulent transfers.
She hid a bank statement inside the wedding photo frame.
Vanessa entered using her temporary code.
At some point, Rachel likely confronted her.
The frame broke.
Rachel had a sedative in her system.
The lights were turned off.
Rachel went down the stairs.
What happened between the broken frame and the fall remained uncertain.
Until Brian Keller turned over an old message.
Rachel had texted him at 7:40 that night.
I know what you and Vanessa did. Daniel sees everything tonight.
Brian never answered.
But Vanessa’s phone records showed Brian called her two minutes later.
7:42.
Exactly when the baby monitor disconnected.
Brian admitted it.
“I warned her Rachel knew.”
My stomach turned.
“You called Vanessa?”
“I panicked.”
“Rachel died ten minutes later.”
He started crying.
“I know.”
That call likely triggered everything.
Then investigators recovered partial location history from Vanessa’s old phone backup.
Her device was inside my home before 8:00.
Again:
Hard evidence she lied.
Michael Reeves’s problems grew too.
He had accessed Rachel’s preliminary toxicology results before they were formally filed.
He later exchanged messages with Vanessa.
One recovered line read:
Nothing points beyond accident if nobody creates a reason to look.
That did not prove he knew she killed Rachel.
But it suggested he was protecting her from scrutiny.
Why?
The financial transfers gave us one possibility.
V.M. Consulting had sent $42,000 to a company controlled by Michael’s wife.
He claimed it was a loan.
No loan agreement existed.
The money moved three days after Rachel died.
When confronted with the records, Michael stopped cooperating voluntarily.
His attorney took over.
Then investigators searched archived cloud backups connected to Vanessa.
They found a deleted voice memo.
Seven seconds.
Mostly movement.
Rachel’s voice.
Angry.
“You stole from Daniel.”
Vanessa:
“Give me the frame.”
Rachel:
“Get out.”
Then a crash.
The recording ended.
I had to leave the room.
Rachel’s voice.
Alive.
Fighting.
Eleven months of grief collapsed into seven seconds.
But even that memo didn’t record the fall.
Vanessa could still argue she left afterward.
Then another artifact surfaced.
A photograph automatically uploaded at 7:50.
Blurry.
Accidental.
Probably triggered when Rachel’s phone fell.
The camera faced the staircase.
Most of the image showed wood flooring.
But in the far corner—
a high-heeled shoe.
Black.
Vanessa wore black heels in the anniversary photos.
May you like
And on the stair above it—
the torn edge of a dark red dress.
