Chapter 13 - “I Only Pushed Her Once”

Michael still had the message.
Not on his phone.
In an exported backup.
Vanessa:
I only pushed her once. She was supposed to step back, not fall.
Michael:
Stop texting me about this.
Vanessa:
You said nobody could prove anything.
There it was.
No interpretation.
No toddler memory.
No reconstruction.
Vanessa’s own words.
The prosecutor read them twice.
My hands went numb.
Rachel had not slipped.
She had not simply lost her balance.
Vanessa pushed her.
Maybe she didn’t intend to kill her.
Maybe she did.
That question would belong to a court.
But the accident story was over.
The rest of the message chain was almost as devastating.
Michael:
Get rid of anything connecting the argument to the money.
Vanessa:
The frame is broken.
Michael:
Then make sure it disappears.
Vanessa:
One piece is missing.
One piece.
The shard Maisie had hidden.
For eleven months.
The smallest person in the house had unknowingly kept the thing Vanessa could not find.
I cried when I realized it.
Not because the glass alone solved the case.
It didn’t.
But because Rachel’s attempt to leave proof had survived through her daughter.
Vanessa was arrested later under charges determined by prosecutors after review of the evidence.
Michael faced his own serious legal consequences.
Brian Keller cooperated regarding the financial fraud and faced accountability for his role.
The stolen money was traced.
Most of it had not vanished.
Vanessa had used part to pay debts.
Part had gone to Michael’s family company.
The rest sat in accounts investigators froze.
But none of that mattered to me as much as one fact.
Rachel had been telling the truth.
She had discovered someone stealing from our family.
She confronted Vanessa.
And she paid for it.
The day Vanessa was taken into custody, she looked at me.
“Daniel.”
I didn’t answer.
“I loved you.”
That finally made me speak.
“No.”
She flinched.
“You wanted what my life gave you.”
“That’s not true.”
“You hurt my children because you were afraid they remembered their mother.”
Her face collapsed.
That was the last time I ever spoke to her directly.
But the case still had one painful question left.
Why did I marry the woman who had been involved in Rachel’s death?
How had Vanessa gotten close enough to me after the funeral without raising suspicion?
Emily found the answer in Rachel’s old emails.
May you like
Vanessa had been planning that too.
Long before the staircase.
