Chapter 10 - Ethan’s Little Recorder
Ethan had an old toy watch.
It could record short audio clips.
I bought it for him on his sixth birthday.
Claire hated it.
Too noisy.
Too distracting.
Ethan hid it inside his stuffed dinosaur.
When he first heard Sophie crying, he recorded the sound because he thought it was a ghost.
Then Claire entered the kitchen.
The watch captured everything.
Ethan:
“Who’s in there?”
Claire:
“Nobody.”
Ethan:
“I heard a girl.”
Claire:
“You heard the pipes.”
Then Sophie cried.
Claire’s voice changed.
“Go upstairs.”
Ethan:
“Who is she?”
A long silence.
Then Claire:
“Someone your father must never know about.”
Another recording.
Three weeks later.
Ethan had brought crackers.
Claire caught him.
“You feed her only when I say.”
“She’s hungry.”
“She eats enough.”
“She’s crying.”
“Then stop listening.”
Ethan:
“I’m telling Dad.”
Claire:
“If you tell Ryan, Sophie goes away forever.”
My hands started shaking.
There were seventeen recordings.
Not all clear.
Not all useful legally.
But several captured direct admissions.
One was especially powerful.
Claire speaking through the vent:
“Your mother should’ve stopped looking for you.”
Sophie:
“Mommy loves me.”
Claire:
“Then she should’ve stayed away from my husband.”
That destroyed Claire’s claim that she believed Emily abandoned Sophie.
She knew Emily was searching.
Another recording captured Mark.
“Claire, open the room.”
“No.”
“This is insane.”
“She saw Ryan’s picture.”
“She knows he’s her father?”
“Not for long.”
The room went silent when investigators heard that.
“Not for long.”
What did Claire mean?
Sophie answered indirectly.
During therapy, she mentioned Claire taking photographs out of the hidden room.
Claire had been systematically removing anything connecting Sophie to me.
Then Ethan’s final recording revealed the coming Monday plan.
Claire was talking to someone on speakerphone.
Male voice:
“Once the guardianship is filed, you can’t keep her hidden.”
Claire:
“I know.”
“What are you telling Ryan?”
“That Emily abandoned her and I rescued her.”
“And the girl?”
Claire:
“She’ll learn the story.”
Not remember.
Learn.
Claire intended to replace Sophie’s actual history with one she created.
The same thing she had done to me.
The same thing she had done to Ethan.
That pattern became central to the case.
Then investigators identified the male voice.
Not Mark.
A licensed therapist named Dr. Paul Mercer.
Claire had been paying him privately.
