Chapter 3 - The Letter Claire Burned

Sophie spent the night at the hospital.

She was dehydrated and underfed.

But alive.

That was all I could think about.

Alive.

Ethan sat beside her bed holding her hand.

He had been feeding her for weeks.

When I asked how he discovered her, he said he heard crying through the vent one night.

Claire caught him.

“She told me Sophie was sick,” he whispered.

“What else?”

“That doctors would take her away if I told you.”

I closed my eyes.

My seven-year-old had carried that fear alone.

Then investigators searched our house.

They found locks inside the hidden panel.

Food receipts.

Children’s medicine.

A small bucket.

No evidence Sophie could leave freely.

Claire was taken in for questioning.

Before she left, she looked at me.

“I never meant for this to happen.”

“What did you mean to happen?”

She had no answer.

The next morning, a detective placed a recovered document in front of me.

Burned around the edges.

Found in our fireplace ash trap.

A letter.

From Emily.

Most of it was destroyed.

But several lines survived.

Ryan deserves to know.

Sophie asks about him every day.

I cannot keep pretending—

Then the page ended.

The detective asked:

“Does your wife normally burn mail?”

“No.”

“Do you recognize the handwriting?”

“Yes.”

My chest hurt.

Emily had contacted us.

Claire destroyed the letter.

But why hide Sophie inside our house instead of simply keeping her away?

That made no sense.

Until investigators showed me a second discovery.

A bank transfer.

$28,000.

From our savings.

To Emily Dawson.

Six months earlier.

I had never authorized it.

Then another.

$12,000.

Then $9,500.

Claire had been sending Emily money.

“Blackmail?” the detective asked.

“I don’t know.”

We traced Emily’s current address.

Vacant apartment.

No forwarding information.

Her employer said she disappeared three months earlier.

That timing mattered.

Sophie had been hidden in our house for roughly three months.

Emily disappeared.

Then Sophie appeared.

I suddenly understood the most terrifying possibility.

“Where is Emily?”

Nobody knew.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman breathed on the other end.

“Ryan?”

My whole body froze.

“Emily?”

She started crying.

“Is Sophie alive?”

I stood so fast my chair scraped across the floor.

“Yes.”

Then Emily whispered:

May you like

“Don’t believe Claire when she says I gave her Sophie.”

The line went dead.
