Chapter 4 - What Happened Before the Wedding

Emily called again through an attorney.
This time, the conversation was recorded legally.
She told me everything.
Nine years earlier, she discovered she was pregnant shortly after we broke up.
She tried calling me.
My number had changed.
She emailed.
The messages bounced.
Then she found Claire.
Claire and I had just started dating.
Emily told her:
“I need Ryan’s new number. I’m pregnant.”
Claire promised to help.
She never did.
Instead, Claire told Emily I was engaged.
That I wanted nothing to do with the baby.
That I threatened legal action if Emily contacted me again.
None of it was true.
“Why did you believe her?” I asked.
Emily cried.
“Because she showed me emails.”
Forged emails.
Supposedly from me.
Cold.
Cruel.
One said:
I don’t care if the baby is mine.
I felt sick.
Claire had started manipulating us before our marriage even began.
Emily raised Sophie alone.
Years passed.
Then Sophie started asking about her father.
Emily searched again.
She found my construction company website.
My photograph.
My contact information.
She sent me a letter.
Claire intercepted it.
Then another.
Then Emily showed up at our house while I was working.
Claire answered.
That was six months ago.
“She begged me not to tell you,” Emily said.
“Why?”
“She said it would destroy Ethan.”
I looked toward my son sleeping in the hospital chair beside Sophie.
“What did you say?”
“I said Ethan deserved a sister.”
That was when Claire offered money.
Emily refused.
The payments from our account?
Claire sent them anyway.
Then threatened to accuse Emily of extortion.
“She told me she had documents proving I demanded money.”
More forged evidence.
“Why did you disappear?”
Emily went quiet.
“Because someone broke into my apartment.”
My skin turned cold.
“Who?”
“I never saw his face.”
Nothing was stolen.
Except Sophie’s birth certificate.
Two days later, Claire called.
She said she had Sophie.
I stopped breathing.
Emily had gone to pick Sophie up from a neighbor.
The child was gone.
The neighbor claimed Claire had arrived saying I sent her.
Emily immediately threatened police.
Claire sent a photograph.
Sophie asleep.
Then one message:
If you involve anyone, Ryan will learn what you did.
“What did you do?”
Emily sobbed.
“Nothing.”
Claire had manufactured financial records making it appear Emily had been stealing from me for years.
Emily panicked.
Moved between friends.
Tried gathering proof.
And during those months, Sophie remained hidden thirty feet from where I ate breakfast every morning.
Then Emily revealed something else.
She had eventually found the original forged emails Claire used nine years earlier.

And one contained metadata.
The account used to impersonate me had been created from an IP address registered to Claire’s father.
