Chapter 7 - Uncle Mark

Mark denied everything.
For twelve hours.
Then investigators showed him location records.
His car near Emily’s apartment.
His phone near Sophie’s school.
Payments from Claire.
He asked for a lawyer.
That was when the story started changing.
Mark admitted Claire hired him to “watch Emily.”
He claimed he thought Emily was threatening our family.
“She told me Emily was unstable.”
“Did you take Sophie?”
“No.”
“Did you enter Emily’s apartment?”
Silence.
His attorney stopped him.
Later, through a cooperation agreement, Mark gave investigators access to an old storage unit.
Inside were boxes.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Printed reports.
And Sophie’s original birth certificate.
My daughter’s identity had been sitting in a storage locker while I lived fifteen minutes away.
Mark eventually admitted breaking into Emily’s apartment.
He claimed Claire told him to retrieve forged documents Emily planned to use against me.
He found no such documents.
Instead, he found proof Claire had lied.
Letters.
Screenshots.
Recordings.
“What did you do with them?”
Mark looked down.
“Gave them to Claire.”
“You knew then.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Sophie was Ryan’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And you still helped?”
He covered his face.
Claire paid his debts.
Then threatened to expose him for illegal surveillance work if he backed out.
Again—
control through fear.
But Mark insisted he never agreed to abduct Sophie.
So who physically took her?
Investigators reviewed Sophie’s school pickup footage.
Claire’s car.
Claire herself.
She walked into the after-school program carrying paperwork.
A notarized emergency authorization.
With Emily’s forged signature.
Sophie went willingly because she knew Claire.
Claire drove directly to our house.
The hidden room was ready.
Mark learned afterward.
He panicked.
But instead of reporting it, he helped Claire hide Emily’s search.
That made him responsible too.
Then Mark handed over one recording.
He secretly recorded Claire after Sophie disappeared.
Mark:
“You can’t keep a kid in there.”
Claire:
“It’s temporary.”
“For how long?”
“Until Emily stops.”
“Stops what?”
Claire’s voice turned cold.
“Trying to take my life away.”
My life.
Not my husband.
Not my family.
My life.
That was how Claire saw Sophie.
Not as a child.
As proof that the life she built belonged partly to someone else.
Then Mark asked:
“And if Ryan finds her?”
Claire answered immediately.
“He won’t.”

A pause.
“I’ve been controlling what Ryan sees for nine years.”
