Chapter 11 - The Price of a Court Order

Judge Sloan approached the damaged car without urgency.
Martin opened my door.
“Give us the key.”
I unfastened my seat belt.
“Judges usually send police.”
Sloan smiled.
“Tonight requires discretion.”
Walter climbed out from the other side.
Two men from the SUVs restrained him.
Evelyn’s forehead was bleeding, but she remained conscious.
Nathan quietly slid his phone between the seats.
The camera faced Sloan.
He was recording everything.
I held the deposit-box key inside my closed fist.
“What’s in box 417?”
Sloan’s smile vanished.
“Property that does not belong to you.”
“My name is on it.”
“Your father’s assets became company property upon his death.”
“That isn’t how inheritance works.”
“It works however the court determines.”
There it was.
The truth behind fifteen years of defeats.
Julian hadn’t simply forged documents.
He had purchased the man responsible for validating them.
Sloan reached for my hand.
I stepped backward into the street.
“You altered my father’s probate file.”
“I corrected irregularities.”
“You buried his toxicology report.”
“I accepted the medical examiner’s conclusion.”
“You dismissed every case I brought.”
“Because every case lacked evidence.”
“Evidence Evelyn made disappear for Julian.”
Evelyn looked away in shame.
Sloan turned toward her.
“You should have stayed loyal.”
She lifted her chin.
“To criminals?”
Martin struck her across the mouth.
Nathan surged forward, but two men grabbed him.
The violence was their second mistake.
Nathan’s phone recorded it all.
Their first mistake was assuming the gala guests had stopped watching.
Before we left the ballroom, Nathan had routed his live phone feed to the giant screen as a precaution.
Everything happening on that street was being broadcast to hundreds of witnesses.
I didn’t know that yet.
Sloan grabbed my wrist.
“Open your hand.”
I refused.
He squeezed harder.
Pain shot through my fingers.
Then sirens echoed from both ends of the street.
Sloan released me.
Police vehicles surrounded the SUVs.
The gala’s reporters had called 911 after seeing the live feed.
Officers ordered everyone to the ground.
Martin tried to hide the document bag beneath a vehicle.
An officer recovered it.
Inside were unsigned arrest warrants for me, Nathan, Walter, and Evelyn.
The alleged charge was corporate terrorism.
Sloan had planned to imprison us before we reached the bank.
The lead detective stared at him.
“You prepared warrants before any crime occurred?”
Sloan said nothing.
Federal agents arrived minutes later.
Apparently one of the gala guests was a deputy attorney general.
Sloan could no longer control the room.
Or the street.
But the bank vault was about to close.
A federal agent drove us the final block.
We arrived at 11:56.
The manager verified my identity and led us underground.
Box 417 was longer than I expected.
I inserted the key.
Inside lay a sealed red folder, an old voice recorder, and a small velvet case.
The folder was labeled:
FOR CLAIRE—ONLY WHEN JULIAN SHOWS HIS TRUE FACE.
My hands began trembling.
My father had known.
May you like
He had known exactly who Julian was.
👉 Harrison Mercer had prepared evidence before his murder, and his final recording would explain why he allowed Claire to marry the man who planned to steal everything.
