Chapter 13 - Locked Inside the Vault

The steel door sealed with a deep mechanical thud.

The lights changed from white to red.

The bank manager rushed to the intercom.

No response.

Nathan checked his phone.

No signal.

The emergency seizure order had placed the entire vault into isolation.

Judge Sloan’s authority was already suspended, but Julian had filed the order minutes earlier using a corporate security provision.

He had planned ahead.

The ventilation system slowed.

Walter examined the door.

“We have maybe forty minutes before the air becomes dangerous.”

Evelyn searched the red folder.

“There has to be an override.”

The bank manager shook his head.

“Only the central control office can reopen it during a seizure.”

“Who controls central security?” I asked.

His face answered before he did.

“Vale Meridian.”

Julian’s company managed the bank’s security network.

My company.

The one he had stolen.

Nathan opened his laptop and connected it to a maintenance port.

“I can break the lockout, but it will take time.”

Dr. Keene sat against the wall.

He looked worse by the minute.

I knelt beside him.

“Tell me where my mother was held.”

“Greenhaven Behavioral Institute.”

“Why?”

“Beatrice had her declared delusional after the staged accident. Anne knew about money laundering through Vale family charities.”

“Is she still alive?”

“I don’t know.”

The uncertainty hurt, but it also gave me hope.

For twenty-nine years, I had accepted that my mother was dead.

Now there was a chance she had survived.

Nathan typed rapidly.

The ventilation fans stopped completely.

Walter removed his jacket and used it to cover the gap beneath the door, trying to preserve the remaining air.

Evelyn handed me another document.

A recent invoice from Greenhaven.

Patient A.M.—long-term private care.

The invoice had been paid only three months earlier.

My mother was alive.

And Beatrice was still paying to keep her hidden.

Nathan looked up.

“I’m inside the security system.”

“Open the door.”

“I can’t. Julian changed the authorization.”

“Can you access the cameras?”

“Yes.”

He pulled up the bank lobby feed.

Julian stood upstairs beside Martin Crowe.

He had escaped the police perimeter during the confusion surrounding Sloan’s arrest.

Owen had apparently given him access to an underground hotel exit before cooperating.

Julian stared directly into the lobby camera.

Then he held up a phone.

A message appeared on Nathan’s laptop.

DESTROY THE TRUST AND THE DOOR OPENS.

I looked at my father’s documents.

The proof of my ownership.

The evidence of murder.

The path to saving my mother.

Julian expected me to choose survival over justice.

For years, that calculation had worked.

This time, I handed the trust to Evelyn.

“Scan everything.”

Nathan understood.

He transmitted copies to the board, federal agents, reporters, and three independent law firms.

Then I held the original pages near the vault’s emergency incineration slot.

Julian watched through the camera.

I smiled.

“You should have learned by now,” I said, “I don’t keep only one copy.”

Nathan triggered the fire alarm through the security network.

Federal law required the vault to unlock during a verified internal fire.

The door began opening.

Fresh air rushed inside.

Julian’s image disappeared from the lobby camera.

He was running.

But not toward an exit.

May you like

Toward Greenhaven.

👉 Julian had lost control of the company and the evidence, so his final chance depended on reaching Claire’s hidden mother before she could testify.
