Chapter 12 - My Father’s Last Voice

I pressed play on the recorder.
Static filled the vault.
Then my father’s voice surrounded me.
“Claire, if you’re hearing this, I failed to stop Julian before he hurt you.”
My breath caught.
I had not heard that voice in fifteen years.
Not clearly.
Not alive.
“I hired Julian because he was brilliant,” the recording continued. “I welcomed him into our home because you loved him. But six months ago, I discovered he had been creating false vendors and moving company funds.”
Nathan opened the red folder.
Bank statements.
Contract ledgers.
Copies of checks.
Every trail led to Julian, Beatrice, Judge Sloan, and Martin Crowe.
My father had documented everything.
“I confronted Julian privately,” the recording said. “He begged for time. He claimed his mother forced him into the scheme. I wanted to believe him because you were planning your wedding.”
Tears burned my eyes.
My father had delayed exposing Julian to protect me from heartbreak.
That mercy had killed him.
“Yesterday, Julian searched my office. He knows I have evidence, but he does not know where it is. I have amended the company trust.”
Evelyn unfolded a notarized document.
If Harrison Mercer died under suspicious circumstances, control of Vale Meridian would not pass to Julian.
It would remain dormant until I formally challenged the succession.
Every signature I had been tricked into signing afterward was legally void.
I was still the majority owner.
Thomas called from the gala as soon as Evelyn confirmed the document.
“The board will recognize the trust immediately.”
Nathan smiled for the first time that night.
Julian had spent fifteen years sitting in a chair that legally belonged to me.
The recording continued.
“There is something else you need to know about your mother.”
I stiffened.
My mother, Anne Mercer, had died when I was six.
At least, that was what I had been told.
“The woman buried under Anne’s name was not your mother.”
The vault became completely silent.
I looked at Walter.
He appeared as shocked as I was.
My father explained that Anne had discovered Beatrice’s financial network years before Julian entered our lives.
She planned to testify.
Then she disappeared after a staged car accident.
My father believed she had been killed.
But one month before his own death, he received a photograph.
Anne was alive.
She stood outside a private medical facility in Vermont.
On the back, someone had written:
STOP DIGGING OR CLAIRE LOSES BOTH PARENTS.
My father had hidden the photograph inside the velvet case.
I opened it.
My mother’s face looked older, frightened, but unmistakable.
Beside her stood Dr. Samuel Keene.
The photograph was dated twelve years after her supposed death.
Keene staggered backward.
“I didn’t know Harrison had this.”
“You knew my mother was alive?”
He lowered his eyes.
“She was being kept under another name.”
“Where?”
Before he could answer, the vault alarm sounded.
The bank manager rushed inside.
“Someone has initiated an emergency seizure of box 417.”
“Who?”
He looked at the computer screen.
“Julian Vale.”

The vault door began closing automatically.
👉 Claire had learned her mother might still be alive, but Julian had triggered a bank lockdown to trap her beside the evidence that could destroy him.
