Chapter 10 - The Camera Inside the Hospital Room

Stephen said:

“Look behind the television.”

The detective immediately disconnected the call.

Security searched the room.

Behind the mounted television was a tiny wireless camera.

Not hospital equipment.

Recently installed.

It faced Madeline’s bed.

Someone had been watching us.

Watching Poppy cry.

Watching Serena’s handbag burst open.

Watching the vial roll across the floor.

Watching Madeline wake.

That explained how Stephen knew.

The device transmitted through a private cellular connection.

Investigators traced it to a security contractor used by Carter Biomedical.

Approved by Stephen.

I felt violated beyond words.

The hospital room had become a stage.

And we had performed exactly as someone expected.

Serena arrives.

Vial appears.

Preston attacks Serena.

Madeline cannot speak.

Perfect chaos.

Then I realized something worse.

The camera had captured me punching Serena.

If released without context, it could destroy me publicly.

Stephen had leverage on everyone.

Financial fraud against Madeline.

Suspicion around Serena.

Violence from me.

Secrets everywhere.

That was his method.

Not simply stealing money.

Making everybody too compromised to accuse him.

Then the detective asked Madeline a question.

“Did Stephen know about Caroline’s evidence?”

She nodded.

“How?”

“I told Preston.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Not you.”

Her voice was weak.

“Your voicemail.”

I remembered.

Three weeks earlier Madeline left me a voicemail.

I never heard it.

My phone had been replaced after a software failure.

David arranged the replacement through company IT.

Stephen controlled IT.

The voicemail had been deleted from my account.

But Madeline had said Caroline’s name.

Stephen’s monitoring systems likely caught it.

From that moment, Madeline became a threat.

Then investigators obtained Stephen’s financial records.

Debt.

Huge debt.

He had personally guaranteed failed investments.

The stolen company money was keeping those obligations hidden.

If auditors discovered the hole, Stephen lost everything.

Reputation.

Board control.

Properties.

Possibly his freedom.

Caroline found the trail.

Madeline found Caroline.

Serena helped both.

So Stephen weaponized the men already stealing for him.

Owen controlled hospital access.

David controlled our finances.

Together, they created a cleanup plan.

But investigators still needed proof linking Stephen to Madeline’s poisoning.

Then David resurfaced.

He walked into a police station with an attorney.

He wanted a deal.

His first sentence:

“Stephen ordered Madeline handled.”

Not killed.

Handled.

The detective asked what that meant.

David looked sick.

“He said scare her. Discredit her. Make her look unstable.”

“What happened?”

“Owen said he had something that would put her in the hospital for a day.”

“And Caroline?”

David’s face collapsed.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen either.”

Silence.

“What happened to Caroline?”

David whispered:

May you like

“Owen gave her too much.”

👉 David’s cooperation finally connected both women’s collapses—but his confession also revealed Stephen had planned to make Madeline survive, because her survival was part of the cover story.
