Chapter 4 - The Locker at Union Station

The locker contained no cash.

No gun.

No dramatic confession.

Just paperwork.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten notebook belonging to Caroline.

The detective did not let me touch anything.

Later, through my attorney, I learned what investigators found.

Caroline had documented months of suspicious behavior by Owen.

Secret calls.

Unexplained deposits.

Fake consulting contracts.

But the most important pages mentioned Carter Biomedical.

Owen was not working alone.

He had help inside my company.

Someone authorized purchases.

Someone approved vendor changes.

Someone had access to Madeline’s credentials.

Caroline used initials.

“D.K.”

I knew one D.K.

David Keller.

My chief financial officer.

My best friend since college.

He had been best man at my wedding.

I wanted the initials to mean somebody else.

They didn’t.

The flash drive contained spreadsheets created from Owen’s laptop.

Payments from Vantage to a Delaware LLC.

That LLC paid another entity.

Keller Advisory Group.

Owned by David’s brother.

My stomach turned.

David had personally helped me investigate the “money Madeline stole.”

He sat in my office.

Shook his head sadly.

Said:

“I hate telling you this, Preston, but those authorizations came from her credentials.”

He encouraged me to confront her.

Encouraged me to distrust my own wife.

And every fight between Madeline and me made the real thieves safer.

Then investigators found something worse.

A message from Owen to David.

M is asking questions.

David:

Keep Preston focused on her accounts.

Owen:

What about Caroline?

David:

Handle yours. I’ll handle mine.

I read that line three times.

Handle mine.

Who was David’s?

Madeline?

Me?

Serena?

Then toxicology returned.

Madeline had a sedative in her system.

Not fatal by itself.

But enough to cause severe weakness and loss of consciousness in combination with another medication.

A medication she had never been prescribed.

The vial found in Serena’s handbag contained traces consistent with that second drug.

Not proof Serena administered it.

But terrifying.

The hospital reviewed access logs.

The vial originally came from Caroline’s floor.

Who accessed that medication cabinet?

Several nurses.

A pharmacist.

And one temporary vendor liaison with special floor access.

Vantage Clinical Solutions.

Name:

Owen Voss.

The room went silent.

Then Serena said:

“That still doesn’t explain why it was in my purse.”

She was right.

If Owen used the vial, why plant it on Serena?

Unless Serena was meant to take the blame.

Or unless she really had done it.

Then my phone rang.

David Keller.

I almost ignored it.

The detective told me to answer normally.

“Preston?”

“Yeah.”

“I heard about Madeline.”

His voice sounded concerned.

Too concerned.

Then:

“Is Serena still with you?”

I looked at the detective.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You need to get away from her.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what she did.”

My blood went cold.

“What did she do?”

David lowered his voice.

May you like

“She killed Caroline.”

👉 David was suddenly accusing Serena of Caroline’s death—but investigators already had messages suggesting David and Owen had been protecting themselves from both women.
