Chapter 8 - What Madeline Meant by Pointing

Serena backed against the wall.
“No.”
Madeline’s finger remained raised.
The detective stepped forward.
“Madeline, are you saying Serena hurt you?”
Madeline shook her head.
Everyone stopped.
Then she pointed again.
At Serena’s dress.
Dark red.
Serena looked down.
“What?”
Madeline whispered:
“Pocket.”
Serena had no visible pocket.
The nurse noticed a hidden seam along the side.
Serena reached toward it.
The detective stopped her.
Evidence technicians later opened it.
Inside was a tiny folded memory card.
Serena looked stunned.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Madeline closed her eyes.
“She did.”
“Who?”
Madeline whispered:
“Caroline.”
The room went silent.
Caroline had apparently hidden something inside Serena’s dress during their hospital meeting three weeks earlier.
Serena had worn the same dress that day.
She hadn’t noticed the card sewn into the lining.
Why would Caroline do that?
Because she no longer trusted anyone.
Not Owen.
Not Madeline completely.
Not Serena completely.
So she distributed evidence.
One flash drive to Madeline.
One locker key.
One memory card hidden without Serena’s knowledge.
If one person was compromised, another copy might survive.
The card contained audio.
Caroline secretly recording Owen.
His voice:
“David is getting nervous.”
Caroline:
“You’re stealing from sick people.”
Owen:
“Don’t be dramatic.”
Then:
“Madeline knows?”
“She’s asking questions.”
Owen cursed.
Another voice entered.
David.
“We shut this down now.”
Caroline:
“You mean stop stealing?”
David:
“I mean stop talking.”
Then something unexpected.
Serena’s voice.
“You two are done.”
So Serena had confronted them.
Not cooperated with them.
The recording continued.
Owen:
“You think Preston will believe his ex-girlfriend over his wife?”
Serena:
“He’ll believe records.”
David laughed.
“No. Preston believes whatever hurts him most.”
That line stayed with me.
Because David had understood exactly how to manipulate me.
Make Madeline look disloyal.
Make Serena look dangerous.
Put betrayal between every pair of people.
Then the final portion of Caroline’s recording:
Owen:
“If Caroline talks, we lose everything.”
David:
“Then she doesn’t talk.”
It was not a confession to murder.
But after Caroline’s death, it became chilling.
Madeline listened from the hospital bed.
Then looked at me.
“You believed them.”
I felt shame flood through me.
“I know.”
“You believed everyone except me.”
“I know.”
Her eyes closed.
That hurt more than anger.
Then the detective entered with another update.
David had disappeared.
His car was found at Denver International Airport.
But he had not boarded a flight.
Owen Voss was also missing.
Two men.
Same day.

And surveillance showed them meeting before they vanished.
👉 David and Owen were running together—but one message left behind suggested they weren’t fleeing the police alone; they were terrified of a third person involved in the scheme.
