Chapter 12 - Why Serena Came Back Into My Life

Stephen’s case grew from records.

Not one dramatic sentence.

Payments.

Messages.

Access logs.

Witness testimony.

The hospital camera.

The planted vial.

David’s cooperation.

Owen’s cooperation.

My uncle’s empire collapsed one document at a time.

But my marriage still had another truth to survive.

Madeline asked for Serena.

I didn’t understand why.

Serena entered carefully.

Madeline looked at her.

“You should tell him.”

Serena’s eyes filled.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

I was exhausted.

“Tell me what?”

Serena sat.

Three months earlier, Madeline learned someone at Carter Biomedical had accessed my private communications.

She suspected Stephen.

She needed someone outside the family.

Someone Stephen underestimated.

Serena.

Why?

Because everybody knew we had history.

If Serena reentered my life, Stephen would assume jealousy.

Drama.

An affair possibility.

He would never assume Madeline and Serena were cooperating.

So they used that.

Serena deliberately let me think she disliked Madeline.

She showed me the suspicious transfers.

But she did not tell me yet that Madeline believed they were forged.

“Why?”

Madeline answered.

“We needed to see who you told.”

I stared at her.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

That hurt.

“Every time I talked to David…”

“He reported back.”

“You let me think you stole money.”

“I thought it would last days.”

“It lasted months.”

Her eyes filled.

“I lost control of it.”

I stood.

Anger returned.

“You could have trusted me.”

Madeline whispered:

“I wanted to.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then:

“Because Stephen raised you.”

That stopped me.

My father died when I was fourteen.

Stephen became everything.

Uncle.

Mentor.

Surrogate father.

He paid for college.

Gave me my first company role.

Helped build Carter Biomedical.

Madeline knew accusing him without proof could destroy our marriage.

So she tried to prove it first.

Instead, Stephen exploited the secrecy.

He made the divide wider.

Serena became collateral damage.

I had punched an innocent woman.

I apologized.

She didn’t immediately forgive me.

She shouldn’t have.

“I lied to you too,” Serena said.

“That doesn’t justify what I did.”

“No.”

That mattered.

Nobody got to erase their own choices just because Stephen manipulated us.

Madeline lied.

Serena lied.

I reacted violently.

David betrayed me.

Owen killed Caroline through his actions.

Stephen orchestrated fraud.

Different responsibilities.

Different consequences.

Then Madeline asked Serena another question.

“Did you find Caroline’s last recording?”

Serena looked confused.

“What last recording?”

Madeline stared toward me.

“The one she sent Preston.”

I shook my head.

“I never got anything.”

Madeline’s face tightened.

“She sent it the morning she died.”

Investigators searched archived servers.

The message had been intercepted by company IT.

Deleted.

But a backup remained.

Caroline’s final voice message was forty-three seconds long.

And the last six seconds contained Stephen Carter speaking directly to her.

👉 Caroline had recorded Stephen before she died—and his own voice was about to reveal exactly what he knew about the fraud and the people helping him.
