Chapter 13 - The Last Attempt to Destroy Avery

Raines reached suddenly for Avery’s leather notebook.

She pulled it away.

He grabbed her forearm.

Avery planted her boots, rotated out of his grip, and forced his wrist down against the side of the armored vehicle.

She did not strike him.

She did not throw him.

She used only enough pressure to stop the attack.

Security officers moved in.

Raines shouted, “She assaulted a superior officer!”

Ward held up her tablet.

“The entire incident was recorded.”

Raines froze.

Avery released him the instant the officers took control.

Her breathing remained measured.

Her hands stayed visible.

Every action followed regulation.

Raines had tried one final time to provoke her into losing control.

He failed.

As officers removed the medals from his jacket for evidence documentation, his eyes remained fixed on the notebook.

“You think that book makes your grandfather a hero?”

Avery looked at him.

“No.”

She held up the switched scorecard.

“This makes you a liar.”

Miles turned away to hide a relieved smile.

Ward ordered Raines confined pending formal investigation.

👉 Avery defeated the trap by doing what Raines could never tolerate—remaining disciplined while his own control collapsed.
