Chapter 2 - Fort Blackridge’s Final Trial

Fort Blackridge was where elite Army marksmen either earned their place or disappeared from the program.

The desert range was unforgiving.

Heat shimmered above the dirt.

Crosswinds changed without warning between the canyon walls.

Candidates trained for weeks before reaching the final qualification.

Avery had arrived with the strongest field record in her class.

She had completed two combat deployments.

She had protected convoys from concealed positions no larger than a truck bed.

She had once remained motionless for fourteen hours to identify the man directing attacks against a medical route.

But at Blackridge, none of that seemed to matter to Colonel Raines.

From her first morning, he questioned her equipment checks.

He reassigned her ammunition.

He placed her on the worst firing lanes.

When male candidates made mistakes, he called them teachable moments.

When Avery made none, he called her arrogant.

Miles noticed it too.

“He wants you angry,” he warned.

Avery kept her voice calm.

“Then he’ll be disappointed.”

The final qualification was supposed to end the harassment.

Instead, Raines destroyed the scorecard before anyone could certify her perfect run.

Now the switched lane stamp showed the disqualification had been planned before she fired.

👉 Avery had believed Raines simply wanted her removed—but someone had prepared a false target before the test began.
