Months later, the Army held a formal ceremony at Fort Blackridge.
The same canyon walls stood beneath the same brutal sunlight.

Avery stood beside her grandmother as an officer read Thomas’s corrected service record.
His forced retirement was officially reversed.
The accusations against his judgment were removed.
He received a posthumous commendation for integrity and protection of military standards.
Avery’s grandmother touched the edge of the leather notebook.
“He never told me how bad it became.”
“He was protecting you.”
“He always protected everyone.”
Caleb Dunn attended.
So did several former candidates whose scores had been manipulated.
They placed old disqualification notices inside a display case beside the recovered lane stamp.
Not to preserve humiliation.
To prove how easily authority could become corruption when no one questioned it.
Avery added the torn strip from Lane Seven.
