Chapter 1 - The Lie She Heard Her Father Tell

The torn paper flower was still crushed in Elsie Romano’s tiny fist when she ran across the rehearsal room.

Rolling costume trunks lined one wall of Cesare Romano’s Westchester mansion. Portable columns stood beside rehearsal benches. Cream backdrop fabric hung behind a temporary stage where donors were supposed to watch a private preview that evening.

But no one was rehearsing anymore.

Elsie buried herself against her grandfather’s dark suit, sobbing so hard her shoulders shook.

Then she pointed directly at her father.

Julian stood beside Vanessa Cole instead of coming to his daughter.

Elsie’s little face was wet with tears.

“Grandpa... Dad told her I was the maid’s daughter.”

Cesare went completely still.

Julian’s face changed instantly.

He stepped in front of Vanessa as though protecting her from his own father.

“Dad... don’t let this get out.”

That frightened Cesare more than the lie itself.

Not because Julian sounded embarrassed.

Because he sounded terrified.

Ethan Cole moved first.

Vanessa’s older brother crossed the rehearsal room, grabbed Cesare by both shoulders, and swung at him.

At sixty-five, Cesare was still faster than Ethan expected.

He stepped aside.

His fist caught Ethan across the face.

Ethan crashed backward into a rolling costume trunk. Metal prop stands scattered across the polished floor.

Vanessa lunged for Elsie.

Her fingers caught the child’s pale pink cardigan.

Cesare knocked Vanessa’s hand away and slapped her so hard she stumbled into a stack of acoustic panels. A hanging backdrop collapsed around her.

Then Cesare positioned himself between Elsie and everyone else.

He stared at his son.

“You hid my granddaughter just to curry favor with this woman. You’re finished.”

Julian looked as if someone had drained the blood from his body.

Cesare bent down.

Elsie’s paper flower had fallen beside his shoe.

One petal had torn open.

Under the wax-colored surface was something that didn’t belong there.

A faint blue financial stamp.

Cesare knew that stamp.

He had designed it himself almost twenty years earlier.

Only documents cleared through the Romano Family Office carried that exact blue authorization mark.

Ethan saw it too.

His anger vanished.

For one second, pure panic took its place.

Cesare noticed.

And suddenly the ugliest thing in that room was no longer what Julian had called his daughter.

May you like

It was the realization that a seventeen-month-old child had somehow walked into the rehearsal room carrying a piece of a confidential financial document.

A document Ethan Cole was clearly afraid of.
