Chapter 10 - Julian Finally Chooses a Side
Julian spent the next night alone in Clara’s workroom.
By morning, he had made a decision that came months too late.
He gave investigators full access to his phones, personal email, banking records, and private cloud storage.
He turned over every financing agreement Vanessa had encouraged him to sign.
He also provided something no one else knew existed.
A backup of an old phone.
Julian had stopped using it shortly before Clara died.
Most of its messages were mundane.
But several exchanges with Vanessa remained.
She pressured him repeatedly about trust disclosures.
She complained whenever he brought Elsie to business events.
She reminded him that Ethan’s lenders wanted a clean succession structure.
And she warned that if Cesare discovered the undisclosed transfers, the refinancing would disappear and Julian would be blamed for destroying the company.
The messages did not contain a confession.
Criminal schemes rarely came with one.
But combined with bank records, login data, false invoices, forged emails, and Clara’s hidden copies, the pattern was becoming difficult to explain away.
Julian also disclosed his own wrongdoing.
He had signed several certifications stating all related-party vendor relationships had been disclosed.
That was false.
He knew Ethan had recommended some vendors.
He did not disclose that connection.
He had also used reserve funds without obtaining Cesare’s required co-authorization.
Julian could no longer pretend he was only a victim.
He had broken rules.
He had concealed information.
He had protected his ambition.
Cesare removed him from every company position immediately.
Julian did not protest.
Then came the harder issue.
Elsie.
Julian voluntarily agreed that Elsie would remain with Cesare and Rosa while the legal investigation continued.
His attorneys began arranging a temporary guardianship order through the family court rather than relying on an informal promise.
Cesare insisted on doing it properly.
He would not answer one act of dishonesty with another.
Julian was allowed to see Elsie under conditions everyone agreed were safe and stable.
The first time he entered the nursery afterward, Elsie moved behind Cesare’s leg.
Julian stopped.
That single movement told him more than any accusation could.
His daughter no longer trusted him to stand between her and danger.
He had taught her that.
Now he would have to live long enough—and change enough—to teach her something different.
Meanwhile, investigators subpoenaed the bank behind Cole Scenic Logistics.
The returned records contained a detail Margaret had been waiting for.
The shell company’s money did not end with an anonymous holding company.
Millions had ultimately flowed into two personal investment accounts.
