Chapter 11 - Why Elsie Had to Disappear
The trust documents revealed the final financial motive.
Cesare had created the Romano Legacy Trust years before Clara joined the family.
Its purpose was simple.
No single generation could sell the entire company without protecting the next one.
Whenever a direct grandchild was properly registered, a portion of future voting interests became restricted for that child’s benefit.
Elsie’s birth mattered.
Not because she automatically controlled millions at seventeen months old.
She didn’t.
But registering her would have forced new disclosures during the restructuring.
Those disclosures would have required independent trust counsel to examine several transactions Julian and Vanessa wanted rushed through.
That independent review almost certainly would have found the vendor relationships.
Vanessa understood this before Julian did.
She had obtained a draft of the trust rules while assisting with financing documents.
That explained her obsession with delaying Elsie’s registration.
It explained why she wanted the child kept away from lenders, donors, and advisers.
It even explained the ridiculous cruelty of calling Elsie the maid’s daughter.
Vanessa needed Julian comfortable with erasing his daughter socially because she had already persuaded him to erase her administratively.
If he could live with one lie, the other became easier.
Cesare hated the elegance of it.
The scheme had used Julian’s weakest qualities rather than creating them.
His pride.
His fear of failure.
His hunger for Cesare’s approval.
His willingness to believe he could fix a dishonest decision later.
Vanessa had not transformed Julian into another person.
She had simply found the parts of him most useful to manipulate.
That mattered to Cesare because it meant Julian still bore responsibility.
No one had forced him to deny his child.
No one had forced him to hide trust information.
He had chosen each compromise.
Vanessa had only made the compromises convenient.
The federal investigation accelerated.
Search warrants were executed at Ethan’s office and at two storage facilities connected to Cole investment entities.
Investigators recovered vendor stamps, blank invoice templates, access records, and copies of Romano Stageworks financial files that should never have left company servers.
One folder contained documents from Clara’s account.
Another contained drafts of the forged emails later used to accuse her.
Vanessa had prepared a dead woman to become the scapegoat if the fraud was discovered.
That act changed something in Julian.
Until then, some part of him had still separated Vanessa’s financial crimes from his private relationship with her.
He could no longer do that.
She had watched Clara die.
She had watched Julian grieve.
