Chapter 11 - ELAINE WAKES
An alarm sounded inside the ICU.
Avery moved before everyone else.
She stepped aside as nurses rushed toward Elaine’s bed.
The family watched through the glass.
Elaine’s fingers moved.
Her eyelids fluttered.
A neurologist entered.
After several tense minutes, the monitor stabilized.
Elaine opened her eyes.
She looked confused at first.
Then she saw Avery.
Her lips moved.
Avery entered after the doctor allowed one person inside.
She approached slowly.
“I’m here, Mom.”
Elaine lifted her right hand but could not hold it steady.
Avery took it.
Elaine touched the medals on Avery’s uniform.
A faint smile appeared.
“My colonel.”
Avery nearly lost her composure.
Outside the glass, Harold looked away.
Elaine tried to speak again.
“Blue…”
“We found it.”
Her breathing relaxed slightly.
“Harold…”
Avery leaned closer.
“Did Dad change your medicine?”
Elaine’s eyes filled with fear.
She nodded once.
“Did you agree to transfer your trusts?”
Elaine shook her head.
“Did Mason know?”
Elaine hesitated.
Then nodded again.
Mason collapsed into a chair outside.
Harold walked toward the exit.
Hospital security blocked him.
Elaine tightened her grip on Avery’s hand.
“Don’t leave.”
Avery looked at the replacement secure device attached to her belt.
Washington had already requested her return twice.
She touched her earpiece.
“Command, family medical emergency has escalated. Request temporary transfer of operational authority.”
There was a pause.
Then the answer arrived.
“Approved. Remain with your mother.”
Avery closed her eyes.
“Thank you.”
Elaine heard enough to understand.
“You stayed?”
Avery bent and kissed her forehead.
“Yes.”
For years, Elaine feared Avery’s duty would always take her away.
