Chapter 7 - MASON’S SECRET
Natalie remembered the envelope.
Three days earlier, Elaine asked her to retrieve a blue folder from the kitchen drawer.
When Natalie entered the house, Mason was already there.
He claimed Harold had sent him for insurance papers.
Natalie saw a blue envelope on the counter.
When she returned from the upstairs bedroom, it was gone.
Mason denied taking it.
Avery watched his face.
He avoided her eyes.
The lead military officer said nothing, but he moved closer to Mason.
Hospital security requested permission to review the parking garage footage.
Mason became defensive.
“This is insane.”
Avery’s voice remained level.
“Open your car.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you have no right.”
Hospital security explained that the vehicle sat on private property and could not be searched without consent or legal authority.
Avery did not threaten him.
She only looked at Natalie.
“Call the local police.”
Mason’s confidence broke.
“Wait.”
He pulled his keys from his pocket.
“I took the envelope, but I didn’t read it.”
Harold closed his eyes.
Avery noticed.
“You knew.”
Harold said nothing.
Mason led them to the parking garage.
Inside his glove compartment was the missing blue envelope.
It contained a handwritten medication schedule, pharmacy receipts, and laboratory results Elaine had secretly requested.
One medication level was dangerously high.
Another prescription had never been approved by her cardiologist.
Elaine had written beside the result:
Harold says I’m confused. Mason says I signed new papers. I don’t remember signing anything.
Natalie stared at her brother.
“What papers?”
Mason’s voice cracked.
“Financial documents.”
Avery’s jaw tightened.
“Mom’s money?”
Mason sat against the side of the car.
“Dad said the family accounts needed restructuring.”
“Did Mom consent?”
“I thought she did.”
Avery held up the note.
“She wrote that she didn’t remember signing.”
Mason looked at Harold.
“You said she agreed.”
Harold’s face darkened.
