Elaine had inherited significant property from her parents.
The assets were separate from Harold’s businesses.
For years, she kept them untouched.
The money was intended for her children and grandchildren.
Three months before the stroke, several trusts were changed.
Control moved from Elaine to Harold.
Mason became secondary administrator.
Avery and Natalie were removed.
The documents carried Elaine’s signature.
The dates matched periods when her medication levels were unstable.
A hospital attorney reviewed the copies and immediately recommended independent legal counsel.
Harold called it a misunderstanding.
Avery examined one page.
Elaine’s name was written cleanly, but the capital E was wrong.
Avery knew why.
As a child, Elaine broke a finger and developed an unusual way of forming the letter.
The signature on the trust documents did not have it.
“This was copied,” Avery said.
Mason looked sick.
“I only delivered papers.”
“To whom?”
“A notary.”
“Did Mom appear?”
“No.”
Natalie turned toward him.
“You notarized her signature without her?”
“The notary knew Dad.”
Harold slammed one hand against the wall.
“Stop talking.”
The command was automatic.
For years, Mason obeyed that tone.
This time, he looked at Elaine through the ICU glass.
“She almost died.”
Harold’s expression became desperate.
“The transfers protected the family.”
“From what?” Avery asked.
Harold said nothing.
A federal liaison arrived to collect a formal report about the compromised device.
When he learned that the incident might involve financial coercion against Avery’s unconscious mother, he contacted local investigators.
Avery did not use her position to control the process.
She insisted civilian authorities handle the family matter.
Harold mistook her restraint for weakness.
“You think uniforms make you powerful?”
Avery looked at him.
“No.”
She glanced toward Elaine.
