Chapter 3 - THE SIGNAL INSIDE THE DEVICE

The black object was not a telephone.
It could place calls, but only through encrypted channels.
It contained no family photographs.
No social media.
No ordinary messages.
It was a secure command device linked to a federal communications network.
Avery carried it because she was participating in an active national-security coordination operation.
The device had several internal protections.
If the casing was forced open, an alert was sent.
If an unauthorized fingerprint touched the secure panel, an alert was sent.
If it experienced a violent impact while connected to an authenticated officer, an emergency signal was sent.
Harold’s slap caused all three conditions within seconds.
A military security unit stationed nearby received Avery’s identity, position, and security classification.
The hospital’s federal emergency protocol activated automatically.
That was why the doors unlocked.
That was why armed authority entered the hallway before Harold had finished shouting.
The lead officer crouched beside the medical cart and examined the cracked casing without touching its secure screen.
“Impact point?”
Avery indicated the metal edge.
“Unauthorized contact?”
“My father attempted to seize it.”
Harold stepped forward.
“I was taking away a phone.”
The officer looked at him.
“That is not a phone.”
Mason tried to laugh.
“So what is it?”
“That information is restricted.”
Harold’s face reddened again.
“This is ridiculous. She’s my daughter.”
Avery’s eyes hardened.
“That does not authorize you to strike me.”
The sentence landed harder than the slap.
For the first time, Harold looked around and realized every nurse had witnessed the attack.
Hospital cameras had recorded it.
Two security officers stood between him and Avery.
Natalie looked ashamed.
Mason still wanted to argue, but his confidence had weakened.
A federal technician arrived carrying a protective case.
He scanned the damaged device and placed it inside.
Then he gave Avery a replacement.
“Continuity restored, Colonel.”
He saluted.
Avery returned it.
Harold watched the exchange in silence.
No one asked Avery to prove herself.
No one questioned her uniform.
May you like
Everyone outside her family already knew exactly who she was.
👉 Avery’s authority was now undeniable—but the emergency signal had also interrupted a classified operation that could not simply wait.
