Chapter 12 - WHAT ELAINE REMEMBERED
Elaine’s speech returned slowly.
A specialist asked simple questions.
Her name.
The year.
Where she was.
Then investigators asked about the medication.
Elaine spoke in short, exhausted phrases.
“Harold changed bottles.”
“Different pills.”
“Made me sleepy.”
Harold’s attorney objected to further questioning, but Elaine insisted.
She remembered confronting him about the trusts.
She remembered threatening to call Avery.
She remembered Harold taking the phone.
Then she said:
“He wanted me declared incompetent.”
Avery’s face hardened.
Harold had arranged a private evaluation with a physician connected to one of his business partners.
The appointment was scheduled for the following week.
If Elaine were declared mentally incapable, Harold could claim permanent control over the assets.
The medication-induced confusion would support the diagnosis.
Natalie covered her mouth.
Mason whispered, “Dad told me it was estate planning.”
Elaine looked at him.
“You knew enough.”
Those were the same words Harold had used earlier.
Mason began crying.
Elaine did not forgive him.
Not then.
She turned back to Avery.
“I tried calling you.”
“I know.”
“He said you wouldn’t come.”
Avery looked through the glass at Harold.
“I came.”
Elaine touched the scratch on Avery’s cheek.
Her expression changed.
“Who did that?”
Avery did not answer.
Elaine looked toward Harold’s reddened hand.
Understanding entered her eyes.
“You hit her?”
Harold remained silent.
Elaine’s weak voice became sharper.
“You called her a liar again?”
He tried to step closer.
She recoiled.
That movement devastated him more than any accusation.
Elaine pointed toward the door.
“Out.”
The man who controlled every room in the family stood frozen.
Avery did not order security to remove him.
She allowed Elaine to reclaim the decision herself.
