Chapter 10 - The General’s Last Flight
Caroline asked the ballroom doors to be closed.
No press.
No guests.
Only family, military investigators, and the officers connected to the case remained.
Nathan stood in front of her.
“Tell me.”
Caroline looked at Shaw.
The investigator nodded.
The information had been declassified that morning.
“Your father’s helicopter did not fail mechanically,” Caroline said.
Nathan’s face tightened.
“What happened?”
“He was transporting the original contract records to Washington.”
Nathan’s eyes widened.
“He was going to confess?”
“Yes.”
Brooke whispered, “Dad always said General Hayes was loyal to him.”
“He was,” Caroline said. “Until the deaths began.”
The defective armor caused more casualties.
Families asked questions.
Internal auditors found conflicting serial numbers.
General Hayes panicked.
He contacted Caroline secretly.
“He offered to testify,” she said.
Nathan’s voice shook.
“Then why was the helicopter destroyed?”
Charles Voss answered.
“Harrison discovered the meeting.”
The helicopter’s maintenance contractor received a payment from a Reed subsidiary two days before the crash.
A critical fuel component was replaced with a defective part.
Harrison did not personally touch the aircraft.
But he financed the sabotage.
Caroline had suspected for years.
The missing journal pages proved it.
Nathan sat down heavily.
“My father died trying to correct what he did.”
“Yes.”
“Does that make him a good man?”
Caroline looked at him.
“No.”
The honesty hurt.
“He signed documents that placed soldiers at risk. His final decision mattered. But it did not erase the earlier ones.”
Nathan stared at the floor.
Brooke moved toward him.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked at her.
“Did you know how he died?”
“No.”
“Did you know your father was involved?”
“I knew there were rumors.”
“And you married me without telling me.”
She began crying.
“I thought if you loved me enough, the past wouldn’t matter.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“The past was sitting at our wedding table.”
Brooke looked at Caroline.
“Please help me.”
Caroline’s expression remained still.
“I can protect you from Dad.”
“What about Nathan?”
“That is not mine to fix.”
Brooke nodded.
For the first time, she accepted responsibility without hiding behind fear.
Nathan removed his wedding ring.
He placed it on the table.
Brooke stared at it.
“Are you leaving me?”
“I don’t know.”
Her face collapsed.
Nathan continued.
“But I will not begin a marriage inside another lie.”
The officers began collecting the evidence.
Then Shaw’s phone rang.
She listened silently.
Her expression changed.
“Harrison’s attorney just filed an emergency statement.”
Caroline frowned.
“What statement?”
“He claims you stole your rank, falsified your combat record, and assaulted him.”
Nathan laughed in disbelief.
But Shaw did not.
