The documents appeared authentic.
Army letterhead.
Personnel numbers.
Electronic signatures.
They stated that Caroline Reed had never been promoted beyond major.
That several medals were under review.
That her current uniform use was unauthorized.
Harrison’s attorney released them to reporters before investigators could respond.
Within an hour, headlines appeared online.
WOMAN IN MILITARY UNIFORM ATTACKS FATHER AT WEDDING.
CLAIMS OF STOLEN VALOR UNDER INVESTIGATION.
Caroline stood in a private hotel room above the ballroom while Shaw reviewed the records.
Nathan paced.
“They are fake.”
“I know,” Caroline said.
“How are you this calm?”
“Because panic does not change documents.”
Her phone rang constantly.
Command staff.
Reporters.
Former soldiers.
She answered none.
Brooke sat near the window, still wearing her wedding gown.
The ceremony had ended.
The marriage license remained unsigned.
Margaret sat across from her.
No one knew what to say.
Shaw looked up.
“The signatures belong to legitimate officers.”
Nathan stopped pacing.
“So someone inside the Army helped him.”
Caroline looked at the dates.
One record had been created while she was hospitalized in Germany.
Another was uploaded three hours before the wedding.
Someone expected her arrival.
Someone prepared the false files.
Voss gave them a name.
Lieutenant Colonel Martin Cale.
A former personnel officer now working for a defense lobbying firm.
Cale had processed Caroline’s promotion orders.
He had also received consulting payments from Reed Defense Systems.
Nathan recognized the name.
“He handled my transfer.”
Caroline looked at him.
“To which unit?”
“Yours.”
The room went silent.
Nathan’s assignment under Caroline had not been random.
Cale placed him there.
Then Brooke met him at a military charity event six months later.
Harrison had built the marriage plan long before either of them understood it.
Brooke whispered, “Dad introduced us.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You said it was an accident.”
“I thought it was.”
Caroline studied the forged personnel record.
Cale had altered dates.
But he made one mistake.
He listed Caroline’s promotion ceremony at Fort Bragg.
It had occurred aboard a hospital ship in the Mediterranean.
Hundreds of sailors and soldiers witnessed it.
One of them was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Caroline finally picked up her phone.
She made one call.
“This is Reed,” she said. “I need the archived ceremony footage released.”
The voice on the other end answered immediately.
“Yes, Colonel.”
Nathan exhaled.
Brooke looked confused.
“Who did you call?”
Caroline placed the phone down.
