Chapter 2 - The Sister Who Erased Her

Nathan remained at attention beside Caroline.
Brooke pulled at his sleeve.
“Please. Not here.”
He looked at his bride as though seeing her for the first time.
“You told me Caroline worked overseas as a private contractor.”
Brooke swallowed.
“She did.”
Nathan’s voice sharpened.
“She commanded my unit.”
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
Several officers stood straighter.
One elderly general near the bar stared at Caroline’s torn collar.
Then he noticed the scar.
“Reed?” he said.
Caroline glanced toward him.
The general’s expression changed instantly.
“Colonel Caroline Reed?”
More officers turned.
The name spread quickly.
Harrison’s face reddened.
“This is my daughter’s wedding. I will not let Caroline turn it into another performance.”
Caroline looked at him.
“I didn’t touch you.”
“You arrived wearing that costume.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“That is a United States Army dress uniform.”
Harrison scoffed.
“My daughter has spent her entire life pretending to be important.”
Nathan’s jaw locked.
“She led forty-three soldiers out of a collapsed forward base.”
The ballroom fell silent again.
Brooke shook her head frantically.
“Nathan, stop.”
He turned toward her.
“Why?”
“Because you don’t know the whole story.”
Caroline studied her sister.
Brooke’s bridal smile had vanished.
Only panic remained.
Harrison moved closer to Nathan.
“Caroline was discharged in disgrace.”
Nathan stared at him.
“No, sir.”
Harrison froze.
Nathan continued.
“She was wounded during an operation that remains partly classified.”
Caroline’s hand tightened around the medal.
Nathan looked back at her.
“Ma’am, I thought you were still recovering in Germany.”
“I was.”
“Then why are you here?”
Caroline’s eyes moved to Brooke.
“Because my sister mailed me an invitation.”
Brooke’s lips parted.
“I didn’t.”
Caroline reached inside her coat pocket and removed the thick cream envelope.
Brooke’s name was printed across the back.
The return address belonged to Harrison.
Her father’s face changed.
Caroline held up the invitation.
“Someone wanted me here.”
Harrison stared at the envelope.
Then toward the ballroom entrance.
A woman in a black suit stood near the doors watching silently.
Caroline recognized her.
Major Evelyn Shaw.
