Chapter 13 - The Bride’s Last Secret

Brooke rose from the chair.

Her wedding dress dragged across the carpet.

“I found it three months ago.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Where?”

“In your father’s study.”

“You went through his locked safe.”

“My father gave me the combination.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Brooke continued quickly.

“The sample was wrapped in a military flag. There was a letter from your father.”

“What did it say?”

“That he was sorry.”

Nathan looked away.

“He named Harrison. He named himself. He said the armor was altered before testing.”

Caroline watched Brooke carefully.

“What did you do with it?”

“I brought it here.”

Margaret gasped.

“To the wedding?”

Brooke nodded.

“Dad expected me to give it to him after the reception.”

“Why didn’t you?” Caroline asked.

Brooke looked at her sister.

“Because I saw your invitation on Mom’s desk.”

Caroline understood.

Brooke knew she might come.

“I hid the sample,” Brooke said. “I thought if you appeared, I would decide who deserved it.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“This was not yours to judge.”

“I know.”

“Where is it?”

Brooke touched the beaded belt around her waist.

She pulled one crystal pin free.

A tiny brass key dropped into her palm.

“The bridal suite safe.”

Shaw immediately sent officers upstairs.

The armor sample was still there.

So was General Hayes’s original letter.

Nathan read it alone.

When he returned, his eyes were red.

“My father knew soldiers died because of him.”

Caroline nodded.

“He wanted me to release everything after his death.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I did not have the physical sample.”

Nathan looked at Brooke.

“You did.”

She lowered her head.

“I was afraid.”

He gave a bitter laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Brooke flinched.

Nathan continued.

“Caroline was afraid and still went back for soldiers.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“No. It isn’t.”

His voice softened slightly.

“You were raised by Harrison. I understand why you learned to survive through silence.”

Brooke looked hopeful.

“But understanding is not trust.”

Her hope disappeared.

Nathan picked up the unsigned marriage license.

He tore it in half.

Brooke covered her mouth.

The wedding was over.

Not paused.

Not postponed.

Over.

Harrison’s plan had destroyed the alliance he spent years creating.

But Brooke did not blame Caroline.

She looked at her sister.

“I chose this.”

Caroline nodded.

“Yes.”

Brooke wiped her tears.

“Will you help me testify?”

Caroline’s expression softened for the first time.

May you like

“Yes.”

👉 Brooke finally chose her sister over her father—but Harrison had already ordered someone to silence her before she reached court.
