Chapter 13 - The Courtroom Went Silent
The judge ordered the agreement seized.
Forensic testing confirmed it had been printed recently.
The paper came from Margaret’s home office.
The signature had been copied from an old school record belonging to Claire’s mother.
Claire sat motionless while the evidence was explained.
Margaret had not merely attacked her finances.
She had taken the name of the woman Claire loved most and used it as a weapon.
The prosecutor asked Margaret whether she wished to change her plea.
Margaret looked toward Theodore.
“Tell them Claire agreed.”
Theodore lowered his eyes.
“Theodore.”
He remained silent.
Margaret’s composure broke.
“I did everything for you!”
He finally looked at her.
“You did everything through me.”
The courtroom went still.
Theodore admitted that his mother had encouraged the false abandonment filing.
He admitted he knew Victor planned to challenge Claire’s authority.
He admitted he had hoped Claire would surrender rather than expose the marriage publicly.
Then he looked at Claire.
“I thought your love made you easy to control.”
Claire felt the truth settle inside her.
For years, she had searched for the right explanation.
Stress.
Grief.
Margaret’s influence.
Business pressure.
But Theodore had just given her the simplest answer.
He believed love was weakness.
Claire rose when invited to speak.
“I did love him,” she said.
Theodore closed his eyes.
“I paid debts he hid from me. I protected employees he forgot. I allowed his mother to live in a home she mocked me inside.”
Claire’s voice did not shake.
“I mistook silence for patience. I mistook sacrifice for partnership. And they mistook both for permission.”
Margaret stared ahead.
Claire continued.
“The slap did not end my marriage. It revealed the marriage I was already living in.”
Theodore began to cry.
Claire felt no satisfaction from his tears.
Only release.
The court accepted Theodore’s plea on assault and conspiracy-related charges.
His sentence included incarceration, restitution, mandatory intervention programs, and a ban on holding fiduciary authority in any Northstar-controlled company.
Margaret refused a plea deal.
She demanded a trial.
She believed the relatives would protect her.
But when the witness list was announced, Martin’s name came first.
