Chapter 6 - The Company Behind the Mansion
Claire had created Northstar Holdings before meeting Theodore.
At twenty-four, she developed scheduling software for regional construction companies. The program reduced wasted labor, predicted supply delays, and helped small contractors avoid bankruptcy.
She sold the operating license to several firms but kept the core technology.
One of her earliest clients was Bennett Construction.
Theodore’s father praised the system publicly.
Privately, he refused to admit that a young woman had designed it.
He told investors the technology had been created “internally.”
Claire could have sued.
Instead, she negotiated something more valuable: a percentage of every project that used her system.
Over time, those royalties made her wealthy.
Theodore knew Claire worked in business consulting.
He did not know Bennett Construction paid her company millions each year.
When the Bennett family business began failing after his father’s death, Claire purchased its most dangerous debt through Northstar Holdings.
She did it to prevent layoffs.
She also did it because she loved Theodore.
That decision gave Claire legal control over the company if Theodore violated certain financial or ethical conditions.
Domestic violence was one of them.
Fraud was another.
Theodore had now triggered both.
Naomi leaned back in her chair.
“So he tried to steal a company already indebted to you.”
“He doesn’t understand what his father signed.”
“Does Margaret?”
“She knows something. Not everything.”
Claire remembered Margaret photographing papers in her office.
“She may have found the debt agreement.”
Naomi checked the mansion cameras again.
At midnight, Margaret and Theodore were arguing in the living room.
The relatives had left.
Margaret pulled at her pearls.
“The cards are frozen!”
Theodore paced near the sofa.
“She’s trying to frighten us.”
“My jewelry account was declined.”
“Mother, focus.”
“You struck her in front of witnesses!”
“She was humiliating you.”
“You were supposed to make her leave quietly.”
Claire felt cold.
Naomi increased the volume.
Theodore lowered his voice.
“Once the abandonment claim was accepted, Victor said we could challenge her control.”
Margaret stared at him.
“And if she shows the full ownership records?”
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Victor found the source of her money.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“What source?”
Theodore looked directly toward the security camera.
Then he reached up with a fireplace tool.
