Chapter 5 - The Papers Theodore Prepared
Naomi arrived at the clinic carrying a thin black folder.
Inside were copies of documents Theodore had submitted through one of the family attorneys.
He claimed Claire had become emotionally unstable.
He claimed she had stopped contributing to household expenses.
He claimed the Willow Creek mansion was inherited property belonging solely to him.
Every claim was false.
“He’s building a divorce case,” Naomi said.
Claire read the papers slowly.
“How did he expect to prove the house was his?”
“He attached a corporate ownership summary.”
Claire examined it.
The document named Willow Creek Legacy Partners as the property owner.
That part was true.
Theodore had simply omitted the next page, which identified Claire as the company’s sole managing member.
“He thought nobody would request the full filing,” Naomi said.
“He thought I would be too ashamed to fight.”
Naomi’s expression softened.
“Were you?”
Claire touched her cheek.
“For about five minutes.”
Then she asked to see the security system records.
Naomi opened her laptop.
Claire had installed the cameras after Theodore’s construction company began receiving threats from an angry former contractor. The system stored encrypted footage off-site.
The mansion account was registered to Claire’s holding company.
Theodore had no administrative access.
Naomi found the birthday footage.
They watched Margaret pour the wine.
They watched Theodore approach.
They watched his hand rise.
Claire looked away before the slap landed.
Naomi closed the video.
“That is enough for a protective order.”
“It’s not enough.”
“For what?”
“To explain why Theodore created false documents.”
Claire remembered his expression when she mentioned the camera.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Check earlier recordings.”
They reviewed footage from the previous week.
Margaret and Theodore had held several private meetings in the living room.
On one recording, Margaret removed papers from Claire’s desk and photographed them.
On another, Theodore spoke with a man Claire recognized as Victor Hale, the family accountant.
The audio was faint but usable.
Victor said, “Once her authority is challenged, you can claim emergency control.”
Theodore replied, “And the house?”
Victor smiled.
“She’ll settle before anyone learns where her money came from.”
Claire stared at the screen.
Naomi asked, “Where did your money come from?”
Claire closed the laptop.
