Chapter 14 - The Day Margaret Lost Everything
Margaret’s trial lasted three weeks.
The prosecution showed the slap footage.
The forged documents.
The hidden room.
The stolen corporate seal.
The insurance records.
The messages instructing Theodore to become drunk and aggressive.
Former employees testified about false expenses.
Relatives described years of threats.
The retired notary admitted Margaret had paid him.
Victor explained the plan to declare Claire mentally unfit.
Margaret’s attorney argued that she had been protecting a vulnerable family business.
The jury did not believe him.
Margaret was convicted on multiple fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and coercion charges.
The judge addressed her directly.
“You treated people as assets to be controlled and secrets as currency.”
Margaret remained expressionless until the sentence was announced.
Then she turned toward Claire.
“You would have nothing without this family.”
Claire answered calmly.
“This family would have lost everything without me.”
Margaret was taken away.
Theodore received a shorter sentence because he cooperated and accepted responsibility, but the court denied his request to return to Willow Creek before reporting.
He collected his personal belongings under supervision.
Claire was present only because certain business records required verification.
Theodore stood in the living room where he had struck her.
The marble had been repaired.
The side table remained.
The security camera had been replaced.
“I remember thinking you looked afraid,” he said.
“I was.”
“And then you looked at the camera.”
“That was when I remembered fear and power are not the same thing.”
He nodded.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
He looked toward the staircase.
“I did love you once.”
Claire believed him.
That was the tragedy.
“You loved me when loving me required nothing from you.”
Theodore had no defense.
Before leaving, he placed the mansion keys on the side table.
The same keys Margaret had demanded from Claire.
After the door closed, Claire stood alone beneath the chandelier.
For the first time, the silence did not feel hostile.
The house was hers again.
But she did not want it to remain a monument to what happened.
She called Naomi.
“Prepare the transfer documents.”
“For the mansion?”
“Yes.”
Naomi sounded surprised.
“Who are you transferring it to?”
Claire looked around the enormous room.
