Chapter 1 - The Dog Who Would Not Leave

Ethan yanked the orange strap with both hands and slammed Megan Cole against the frozen pine tree.
Pain exploded through her ribs.
Snow shook loose from the branches and fell across her bruised face.
Megan’s knees nearly folded, but the strap pinned her upright.
“Freeze,” Ethan said with a smile. “Or die.”
Ten feet away, Rex lunged through the snow.
The retired German Shepherd barked with enough force to echo across the forest.
“Stay!” Megan gasped.
Rex stopped instantly.
Every muscle in his body trembled.
His eyes never left Ethan.
Megan wore the same damaged combat uniform she had returned home in three days earlier. A winter tactical jacket covered part of it, but nothing could hide her swollen cheek, cracked lips, or the way she protected her injured side.
Ethan pulled the strap tighter.
The pressure crushed against ribs that had not fully healed.
Megan refused to beg.
He leaned close enough for his breath to fog across her face.
“At least your funeral stays cold.”
Behind him, Lorraine Cole stood beside a black SUV in an expensive fur-lined coat.
Megan’s mother-in-law held a black duffel bag and watched as calmly as if she were waiting outside a restaurant.
“She won’t last the night,” Lorraine said.
Ethan began walking toward the SUV.
Lorraine stepped forward.
Rex moved between her and Megan.
A low growl rolled from his chest.
For the first time, Lorraine stopped.
Megan lowered one trembling hand.
Two fingers touched the bark.
Tap.
Tap.
Rex’s ears shifted.
It was not random.
It was an old field command.
The dog circled behind the tree, found the knot, and began tearing at the strap with precise bites.
Lorraine saw the bright orange material move.
Her smile vanished.
She pulled a folding shovel from the duffel bag and rushed forward.
Rex spun around.
His teeth flashed.
Lorraine froze mid-step.
Megan raised her head as the strap slipped one inch looser.
Blood darkened the corner of her mouth, but she smiled.
“He never leaves a soldier behind.”
Ethan stopped beside the SUV.
He turned.

And for the first time that afternoon, he looked afraid.
👉 Ethan believed Megan was too injured to fight back—but he had forgotten that Rex was trained to recognize commands no civilian could hear.
