Chapter 12 - Lorraine’s Real Plan
Lorraine never intended Ethan to keep the insurance payment.
The trust documents gave her control of the cabin.
The business restructuring documents gave her authority over Ethan’s company after Megan’s death.
A private loan agreement required Ethan to repay Lorraine immediately when the policy paid.
Between the debt, fees, and trust transfer, almost all the money would move to her.
Ethan had planned to kill his wife.
Lorraine had planned to profit from both of them.
When investigators showed Ethan the documents, his loyalty disappeared.
“She said we’d split it,” he whispered.
Megan watched the interview later through a recorded legal summary.
Ethan looked smaller without Lorraine beside him.
“She said Megan’s military benefits would keep paying.”
The investigator asked, “Did you believe your wife’s death would create long-term income?”
Ethan covered his face.
“I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
Megan turned off the recording.
He had thought clearly enough to select the tree.
Pack the strap.
Steal the pistol.
Stage the flask.
The truth was not confusion.
It was entitlement.
Lorraine blamed Ethan in her own interview.
She said he invented the plan after years of emotional mistreatment.
When asked what mistreatment meant, she answered:
“Megan made him feel inferior.”
No bruises.
No threats.
No financial control by Megan.
Only a successful wife whose strength reminded Ethan of his weakness.
Reeves cooperated quickly.
He admitted accessing records and preparing false medical language.
Martin Vale was arrested days later at an airport under another name.
His laptop contained draft insurance claims dated before the forest trip.
The date of Megan’s supposed death had already been entered.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Still, Megan’s recovery was slow.
She woke from nightmares hearing the strap tighten.
She avoided trees.
Cold air made her ribs ache.
Rex refused to sleep farther than three feet from her bed.
Military investigators offered to place him with a K9 support program while Megan rehabilitated.
She declined.
“He stays with me.”
No one argued.
Then Megan received a sealed envelope recovered from Lorraine’s duffel.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Ethan.
It was dated six months earlier.
The opening sentence read:
When Megan is gone, we can finally live like the family we were meant to be.
The letter was not addressed to Lorraine.
